Thomas J. Jacoby

Thomas John Jacoby, age 70, of Wilmington, Delaware, formerly of Edgewater Park, New Jersey, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at Wilmington Hospital.

Thomas was born in 1954 in Trenton, New Jersey, son of the late Joseph Jacoby and June Frank Jacoby. He graduated from Holy Cross High School, Delanco, NJ in June of 1972. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in History from Allentown College of St. Francis De Sales, Allentown, PA in May of 1976. He then went on to receive his MBA from Rider University, in Lawrenceville, NJ, in February of 1981.

Tom knew from an early age that he wanted to be a teacher.  After spending one year teaching in the Trenton, NJ prison system, he secured a position at Shawnee High School, located in Medford Lakes, NJ.  He taught U.S. History I and II, Constitutional Law and Foreign Affairs for 35 years, before retiring in 2012. He participated in the Shawnee High School Veterans Program and was the Athletic Director at Immaculate Heart of Mary, in Wilmington DE, in the 1990s.

Tom was quick-witted, and loved nothing more than playing jokes on the people he loved.  He also enjoyed photography and videography, so he’s hidden behind a camera in most family pictures.

Thomas was predeceased by his loving wife, Amy Micallef Jacoby. He is survived by his son, Joseph Thomas Jacoby (Alyssa) of Hockessin, DE., his grandchildren: Sloane and J.J., his sister: Marci Jacoby of Wilmington, DE, and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Interment will be private.

Tom and I worked together for over 30 years. We shared a lot together and taught a lot of the same subjects. He was a good teacher and was well liked by the students. He was always proud of his family and was always talking about his wife and son.He was our school’s union rep which was not an easy gig. He took a lot of abuse and criticism for his, effort.ahis father Joe was a marine who fought during World War Two in the Pacific Theatre at the Nattle of Saipan.Joe had left HS early to join up ..Years later at “OperationGraduation” Joe was granted an honorary degree at Shawnee it was a proud day for the Jacoby family..Tom had a unique dry sense of humor that we appreciated in the planning center. His turkey roaster was a big hit on our “FatFridays.I am slightly older than Tom so we worked together from out 20s to our 50’.That was a lot of time together and I always appreciated his friendship….RIP my friend

Mr Jacoby was one of my favorite teachers at Shawnee Class of 1997. As someone who matured into an avid history buff, he was an early seed planter into a pass time that engages a good deal of my personal time. I kinda always wanted to reach out and offer my appreciation for the impact so I’ll offer it here. Rest in peace.

Cheryl and I offer our sympathy on the passing of Tom. He loved his family and cared about his friends. We have fond memories of Amy, Tom and Joe coming to our annual picnic. Tom brought the beer and Amy brought the conversation. May Tom and Amy's souls rest in eternal peace and may the Lord bring comfort to his family in this sad time.
