Susan had a smile that brought the light of the sun into the room. It was a real smile, the kind that would get you smiling in return. I did not spend much time with her. The only times I was ever physically in her presence were the times she came to California to visit her son Ken, my daughter Starr (Ken's wife) and the grands Kai and Keira. But those few times were enough for me to get a good sense of the power of her 1000-watt smile. When I think of her, even now, I see that smile of hers, it traveled all the way up to her eyes crinkling the corners. I am grateful that the grandchildren we share (Kai and Keira) had her influence in their lives. She helped, through example, to teach them about the importance of family. And then as bonus, everyone attests; she made the best cookies! I will say the cookies I have eaten, which I have been told came from her recipes, are indeed the 'you can't eat just one' variety. It was said, no one could compete with Susan when it came to baking cookies. Though, I think Keira has given MomMom a run for her money in the cookie baking venue! I who was in her physical presence only a few times and so I mostly know her by the stories Ken and Starr and the grands tell about MomMom. Most of those stories had as component the love she carried for her family. That love does endure. She will be carried forward in the hearts of her family and every time Keira makes a batch of cookies using one of MomMom's recipes, stories will be told again while baking and then as the cookies are eaten. We know, the cookies will taste all the better for the stories told, as they will be infused with just a bit of Susan's love and radiant smile. And, just so you know, Kai may sneak an extra cookie, just so he can ruminate a bit more related to how fortunate he and his sister were to have MomMom in their life.
