Stanley Lamar

Stanley T. Lamar, of Hockessin, DE passed away early Sunday morning, February 13, 2022 at the age of 88.

Stan was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Among those celebrating his life and remembering his infectious smile are his loving wife, the former Margot Mimmack of Buffalo, NY; his two sons, Tom of Moscow, ID and Steve (Heidi) of Fairfax, VA; his sister Patricia Geoffroy of Overland Park, KS; his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The youngest of five children, Stan was born in Pueblo, CO in 1933 to Ralph Franklin “Husky” and Sara Avis Clayton Lamar. After graduating from high school in Topeka, KS, Stan went on to earn a BS in Chemical Engineering at Yale University in 1955.

In the fall of 1955, he went to work for DuPont, launching a 36-year career that took him from Niagara Falls, NY – where he met his wife of nearly 63 years – to Wilmington, DE – where he and Margot raised two boys and a dog.

Upon retirement from DuPont, Stan spent more than three decades as a tax advisor with H&R Block, where he helped thousands of clients in the Wilmington area and around the country navigate complex tax forms and legal requirements.

Stan was actively involved in many community and volunteer activities wherever he went. An Eagle Scout who inspired his two grandsons to achieve the same honor, Stan participated in camping and scouting activities throughout his life. For 35 years, he served as treasurer of Concord Presbyterian Church, where he also held other lay positions. In 1999, Stan was recognized as “Volunteer Extraordinaire” for his 25 years of service to the Lake Naomi Club in the Poconos, where he was on the Board of Governors and served as Commodore of the Sailing Association.

In his spare time, Stan could often be found on the links or in the Grille at the DuPont Country Club, sailing Lasers at Lake Naomi, or rooting for his beloved Bulldogs at the Yale Bowl. He delighted many with his beautiful tenor voice, singing with the Yale Glee Club in college, the Interpreters in Wilmington, and the Yale Alumni Chorus in adventures throughout Asia, Latin America, Europe, and Australia. An amateur genealogist and avid collector of memorabilia, Stan enjoyed researching and talking about family histories, and loved discovering Karymors and other playground equipment produced by his father’s company – RF Lamar & Co. – throughout the Midwest.

A celebration of Stan’s incredible life and all the people he touched will take place – after the tax season – on Monday, May 9, 2022 at 11:00 am at Concord Presbyterian Church, 1800 Fairfax Boulevard, Wilmington, DE 19803. In lieu of flowers, donations in Stan’s name may be made to the American Heart Association at http://www.heart.org.

Dear Margot, Tom, Steve and families, My sincere condolences on your loss. Please know that he is remembered as a wonderful classmate and friend. We hiked together in all sorts of weather up the hill to chemistry at Yale, and I benefited from "his infectious smile". As a fellow Eagle, I'm delighted to know that he inspired two grandsons, and assume they will follow by inspiring successors. We also shared in common our service as church treasurers and sailing commodores as well as interest in family histories. May you be comforted by memories of his long life, well lived. Blessings, Merz

Bill Piper lit a candle and writes,
Dear Margot, Steve, Tom, and families: As you know, I was privileged to be Stan’s roommate for three of our four years at Yale. During those years I watched him fall in and out of love several times ( and was grateful when he finally became wise enough to marry Margot in 1959!). He and Margot attended my wedding in June of 1959, a gift that I will always treasure. My wife and I were fortunate enough to share many of our Yale reunions with Margot and Stan along with our other two roommates and their wives. Those became treasured memories for all of us. Stan was proud of his family heritage and his family meant everything to him. His life was well lived and my wife and I were blessed to have him as part of our lives. Blessings and prayers to all of you.

Dear Margot and family, Terry and I cherished every minute we spent with you and Stan. Stan was a precious roommate at Yale together with Bill Piper and John Kidwell. His infectious smile and good nature served him and us well. What we had in common continued to grow long past graduation. What a man! Husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother extraordinaire. Church leader, singer till the end, ardent traveler, genealogist, sailor and tax expert, on and on its goes. He blessed us all and his memory lives on as a blessing. Chuck and Terry Kroloff
