I am saddened to see of the passing of Mr. Rao. I was privileged to have him as an advisor while doing graduate work at Virginia. I think of him often, with the fondest memory being a student trip to Rishikesh in 1991. He was a wealth of knowledge, but he was also completely genuine and kind and had an amazing wit. He will not be forgotten.

Professor Rao had such a warm, caring, and lighthearted spirit. As an undergraduate in his Semester-in-India program, I learned not only from his expertise in Hinduism and Gandhian studies, but his way of being with people and in the world. Over thirty years later, I am deeply grateful for the life-transforming opportunity to study with him in Rishikesh. Sending my heartfelt condolences to his loved ones ... Kristin
