Sarah D. Montigney

Following a long and joy-filled life, Sarah D. (Sally) Montigney, age 94, departed this world peacefully on December 5, 2021.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1927, Sally spent her youth riding her beloved horse Mandy, swimming and spending time with friends and family. After graduation from Shaker Heights High School, Sally attended Western Reserve University.

Sally married John Wilson (Jack) Montigney in 1949 and together they raised four children while moving around the country with Jack’s job at the DuPont Company until settling in Wilmington, DE. Regardless of where they landed, Sally was an avid volunteer. Whether it was as PTA president, Girl Scout Leader, prom mom, church volunteer or if someone needed a shoulder to lean on, Sally was available. She was loved by all who knew her, including her children’s friends who she always welcomed in with open arms.

In 1974, with their children settled in school, Sally began a career as a receptionist with both The Children’s Bureau and Child Inc. There was no one better for this role as she made everyone she met feel like they mattered.

Together, Sally and Jack were active lawn Bowlers at the DuPont Country Club, competing in tournaments up and down the Eastern seaboard and serving as presidents of the club. She was a lover of sports and joined Jack in attending sporting events of all kinds, whether at their children’s schools, near their home or wherever their travels took them.

Sally was predeceased in life by her husband Jack and her parents Dr. Richard Dexter and Mrs. Bertha Dexter. She is survived by her brother, Richard Dexter (Sue) and her children Dr. Paul Montigney (Debbie), Bruce Montigney (Shirlee), John Montigney and Sara Cakebread. She was loved and will also be greatly missed by her grandchildren Philip Montigney (Casey), Henry Cakebread (Ashley) and Caroline Cakebread as well as three great grandchildren.

Burial will be private and for those interested, donations made in Sally’s name to Child, Inc. or the Shriner’s Hospital for children will be appreciated.
