Roy Lee Armstrong, Jr.

Roy Lee Armstrong, Jr., 84, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on July 11, 2023 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Roy was born in 1938 in Cleburne, TX to the late Roy Lee Armstrong, Sr. and Opal Pearl Bowen Armstrong. He graduated from Cleburne High School in 1957.  Roy attended the United States Military Academy at West Point from 1957-1961 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and ranked in the top 5% of his class.  He then continued his service in the U.S. Army for 2 years in Germany. In 1964, he began his career with DuPont. He worked in various management positions in Engineering, Manufacturing, and Research & Development Administration.  He was a leader in Product Development and had extensive experience specific to the medical device industry. While working for DuPont, Roy attended Vanderbilt University and graduated with a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1970.  After 32 years at DuPont, he retired and began a new role at Dade Behring Inc. in 1996.  He served as Director of Technology Management with continued success until his retirement in 2006. Outside of work, Roy’s interests included reading, stamp collecting, photography, country music, bicycling, crossword puzzles, computers, cars, and watching sports – especially football. Every December he would faithfully root for the Army to “Beat Navy!”

Roy took great pride in his family, as they were his greatest joy throughout his entire life.  Along with his wife Amy, he instilled strong family values that will be proudly carried on by his children and grandchildren.  Roy was a very involved parent and grandparent, always supporting his family and their goals, and cheering on their achievements.  He cherished his time with Amy and they were rarely apart.  Their love for one another is infinite.  Roy was kind, wise, hard-working, funny, loving, and easy to love. He was a true gentleman. His adoring family is thankful for every second with Roy, and they will miss him always.

Roy was predeceased by his sister Johnny Armstrong Abbey, and nieces Donna Lyn Abbey and Coley Morrow Ludwig. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Amy Freed Armstrong and his daughters Megan Cole Armstrong and Katie Armstrong Gulick; son-in-law Gregory Michael Gulick; grandchildren Theodore Lee Gulick, Virginia Pearl Gulick, and Natalie Sandra Gulick; niece Kristin Abbey George and her husband Ranji; nephew Christopher Scott Morrow and his wife Jayne.

May sincerest condolences to the family. Although I never got to meet my cousin in person I knew him from pictures my daddy (Lewis Armstrong, Sr) had of the cousins growing up in Cleburne. I had gotten to connect through Facebook and shared some of the photos with him. May your hearts find peace and mend the hole left by this dear soul. ~Kitten Armstrong De Leon

Amy, Megan, Katie that is such a beautiful obituary to Roy. I find myself with tears rolling down my cheeks as I read it. It brings back so many memories of us growing up together, lining up together in football, his tutoring me in geometry, me riding behind him on his Cushman Eagle motorcycle, and later in his mom’s new Plymouth. He was so much brighter than most of us; but, he never treated us as such. He was just one of the guys. Although distance has kept us from seeing one another often, we have remained close friends. I have enjoyed the pictures of the family on social media. His joy of being with his family shows through in the pictures with his big smile! Amy, you have been such a joy to him along with Megan, Katie, and the grandchildren for which I am grateful! Megan, thanks for keeping us updated. I wish I was there to give you all a hug!🙏 Again, Annelle and I send our love and deepest condolences to you all!

I'm deeply sorry for your loss. Roy and Amy lived up the street from me in Foulk Woods. Roy, although quiet, was always kind and friendly when I was walking my dogs in the neighborhood. May he rest in peace.

I'd like to offer my condolences to the family. I worked with Roy in Glasgow Delaware. Roy was a great person to work with. He probably didn't know it as I worked in production and IT but he had a very positive impact. He was able to explain complex situations simple and turn down a proposal without making it personal. He was a great story teller which made his explanations interesting and more valuable. He gave me inspiration to develop those same skills.

Roy was a peer of mine for most of my years with DuPont and Dade Behring! He was a quiet gentleman in all ways! Generally tried to seek common ground on difficult issues! He indeed was an effective manager and contributed greatly to the success of the Medical Products team in a variety of assignments! RIP Roy you acquitted yourself well as a man, friend and manager! RIP Bruce
