Robert Francis Byrnes, Jr., 83, of Wilmington, Delaware sailed off from this world on Sunday, February 5, 2023 to join his beloved wife of more than three decades, Maureen C. Byrnes, who recently predeceased him.
Born in New York, New York, Rob was the son of the late Robert F. Byrnes and Margaret Sutton Byrnes and eldest of a large clan that lived at 60 Hillside Avenue in Tenafly, New Jersey. He was predeceased by brothers Kenneth John Byrnes and Stephen Eugene Byrnes.
Rob graduated from Power Memorial Academy and attended Villanova University. He spent many years working in the hospitality industry for the Horn & Hardart Company before moving to Wilmington to serve as an executive with MBNA.
Rob had many passions: an orderly garage; bill paying; sailing the Long Island Sound and Chesapeake Bay; Maureen’s cooking and, of course, Maureen.
He is survived by his children: Amy Byrnes; Robert (Fe) Byrnes; Andrew (Jamie) Byrnes; Patrick (Kerry) Byrnes; Meghan Byrnes; Joan (Cambell) Jones. His siblings: Margaret Harder; Kathleen (Chuck) Kircher; Patricia (David) Sutton; Mary (Ron) Paone. His stepchildren, Kate (Blake) Taylor and Bill (Ang) Snyder. His grandchildren: Max Walsack; Annie Walsack; Maddie Walsack; Nick Walsack; Olivia Byrnes; Emily Byrnes; Ava Byrnes; Ben Jones; Maya Jones; Molly Taylor; Declan Tayor; Liam Snyder. And many nieces and nephews.
As salty as the sailor character he was named for by the grandkids, “Popeye” was loved by all.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 10, 2023 at 1:00 PM at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, 2013 Gilpin Ave., Wilmington, DE 19806.
