Robert Dennis Carlton, age 86, of Wilmington, DE died in his sleep on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Foulk Manor South. He was born in Hammond, Indiana and graduated from Hammond High School as the valedictorian of his class in 1949. He obtained a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1953. While at college he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, Eta Kappa Nu scholastic Electrical Engineering fraternity and Skull and Crescent Activities club. Bob was an avid bridge player playing at least once a week for most of his life and teaching bridge to many new fans. Bob was also a Civil War buff, crossword puzzle aficionado and avid football fan. Bob loved to read and never met a debate he did not participate in. His children fondly remember his model trains in the basement and the amazing art work he did to go with it. Above all else he spent his entire adult life married to Roberta Carlton and enjoying the many adventures they had.
Bob was a devoted and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his best friend and wife Roberta; daughters Laura Nichols and Nancy Surma; sons Edward and William Carlton; grandchildren, Krystal Carlton, Amber Watts, Rachel Nichols, Sophia Carlton, Robert Carlton and Stephanie Surma.
