Born to H. Marion May and George H. May in 1935, Dick was graduated from Tower Hill School in 1953, Hamilton College in 1957 and Cornell Law School in 1960. He married Jean Moore in 1962.
He is survived by Jean; a daughter, Sherri (Steve Maxwell); a son, Glenn (Jean Bramley), plus a granddaughter, Bethany Maxwell.
He retired as a senior partner at Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor in 2000 after 39 years of practicing real estate law. He was elected to the American College of Real Estate Lawyers (ACREL).
Dick was a true Renaissance man who enjoyed classical music, the opera and great literature – subjects he taught and enjoyed at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. At Cokesbury Village he was editor and writer for High Spots, the community’s literary journal, and wrote a book of short stories titled Witness for the Defense.
He volunteered in leadership roles in many civic, church and social organizations, including Westminster Presbyterian Church, and at Cokesbury Village.
Dick was admired for his intricate ship models, which he made by hand. He also enjoyed skiing into his 80s and loved fly-fishing for trout.
Dick was a quiet man, but those who got to know him will miss his wit and warmth and genuine integrity.
In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the Delaware Symphony Orchestra or OperaDelaware.
Services will be held Saturday, January 13 at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1502 W. 13th Street, Wilmington, DE 19806.
