Richard C. “Dick” Stout, Sr., aged 102, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2022 at home in Wilmington, surrounded by his loving family and his devoted caregivers.
Dick graduated from P. S. DuPont High School in 1938 and went on to attend Goldey Beacom College and the University of Pennsylvania. Although his secondary education was interrupted by his draft into the Armed Forces in 1943, he completed his education and attained his degree in Finance in 1949.
A decorated veteran of WWII, Dick was a member of the Pacific Aviation Engineers with the U. S. Air Force and built runways on Okinawa for B-29 bombers. He attained the rank of Sergeant and earned the American Service Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the Static Pacific Service Medal, and the Good Conduct medal before his honorable discharge in 1947.
Dick was an Export Transportation Manager in the shipping division at Hercules, Inc. until his retirement in 1983 after 43 years of service. During his tenure with Hercules, he had the opportunity to travel abroad and visited places such as London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Scandinavia, Germany, etc.
Dick married the love of his life, Jeanne Poole, in 1942 and they had a daughter (1943) and a son (1947). Jeanne and Dick were lifelong residents of Delaware and bought one of the first houses built in Fairfax, where they lived until their deaths. They owned a small vacation home in Rehoboth for 25 years and enjoyed spending as much time as possible there, especially with family and friends.
A friendly man with a quick smile and a great sense of humor, Dick loved socializing with his friends, playing cards at the community center, crossword puzzles, and was an avid and skilled amateur golfer – he played almost every day until well into his eighties. He was a lifelong lover of music and an accomplished pianist who, in his early adulthood, played with big-band and jazz groups. A quick-witted man, Dick read the newspaper every day and remained sharp until the end of his life, often amazing his caregivers with his acumen at his advanced age.
Dick was devoted to his family and they to him. He was a wonderful son, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather who never failed to greet them with a big smile and a hug. He was supportive, giving, loving, and always had time for his loved ones.
Dick was a lifelong member of the World Trade Centers Association of Philadelphia, was a member of the Eureka-DuPont Lodge 23-29 A.F. & A.M, and was a Freemason with the Delaware Consistory.
Dick is survived by his son, Richard C. Jr., his grandchildren; Jennifer J. Conway and her fiancé’ Stephen Smith, Richard E., Conway and his wife Stephanie Conway, and Adam Conway; his great-grandchildren; Skyler M. Poeta and her husband Julian Poeta, Richard C. Conway, and Ryan S. Conway. We are expecting his first great-great-grandson in March.
Dick was preceded in death by his mother, Nellie Parks Stout, his daughter, Donna J. Conway (nee’ Stout), and his beloved wife of 59 years, Jeanne P. Stout.
A private memorial service and burial were held on January 25, 2022.
