Richard A. Yates

Richard Alan Yates died peacefully at home on August 29, 2024 due to Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He was 94. Born in Piedmont California, Dick was an Eagle Scout and remained involved in scouting through adulthood. He graduated from Piedmont High School in 1948 and University of California in 1956 with a PhD degree in Microbiology. To support his family, he promptly began his career with the DuPont Company where his focus was research in biological feedback.

Dick enjoyed hiking, camping, and his farm in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania as well as reading and music. Foremost, however, was his family and his dedication to Opera Delaware where he built sets for various productions. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and gentle spirit.

His wife Genevieve Koury Yates and daughter Ruthellyn Yates preceded him in death. He is survived by many nieces and nephews on the east and west coast.

No services will be held at this time. Memorial donations in Dick’s honor can be made to Opera Delaware, https://operade.my.salesforce-sites.com/donate.

I will always remember my Uncle Dick, his intelligence, humbleness, and wonderful conversations. Mostly his gentle and kind spirit, his true concern and desire to care for those he called family. I am blessed to have known him and to be his niece.

Grant Leister lit a candle and writes,
I am deeply saddened by the news of my Uncle Dick’s passing. He was such an incredible person throughout my life. I loved that he drove out almost every year to visit his sister (my grandmother) and me while camping along the way. I’ll also remember all the amazing things he showed me when I came out to visit him in Delaware. He was such a nice, kind and generous man and me and my family will miss him greatly.
