Reg Davies, age 86, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2022, after a short illness. Born in 1936, in Stanton Hill, England, to Nina (Bentley) and Reginald Davies.
He was graduated with honors in Chemistry, Physics and Pure Mathematics from the University of London and completed a PhD in Particle Science and Technology from Chemical Engineering, Loughborough University, England
He authored over 170 presentations and technical papers internationally and chaired over 60 technical sessions in Particle Science and Technology worldwide. He was an avid traveler. Business, science, and pleasure took him to over 50 countries in four continents. He had a deep passion for soccer and was an early President of the Kirkwood Soccer Club, where he coached for ten years taking the Kirkwood Cavaliers to two successful tours in England, Germany, and the Netherlands. He was an outstanding local cricketer; and until his death, he remained an ardent lover of international cricket and world soccer and followed both via the internet.
In England, he worked for the National Coal Board Scientific Department. After 13 years with the Coal Board, followed by 8 years at the Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute (IITRI) in Chicago, he joined the DuPont Company where he became a DuPont Fellow and Manager of the Particle Science and Technology (PARSAT) group at the Experimental Station. He retired after 23 years and remained active in the Particle Technology community.
He was a churchgoer and a lover of music, serving as a chorister for 14 years at All Saints Church, England. He was a member of Christ Church Christiana Hundred.
He loved flowers, gardens, dogs, and liked ballroom dancing. Though he became a United States citizen on May1, 1990, and lived in the US for over 50 years, he never lost his “Englishness” or his native accent. He built an English Pub in his basement and there he could always remain in touch with his past. Reg was a kind, honest and caring man who loved his family, and believed in giving life changing opportunities to both students and co-workers. He was a happy man and had an “English” sense of humor. For this he was loved and highly regarded. He will be missed by many.
Preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Una Murphy, and son, Paul Leslie Davies. He is survived by his wife of 44 years Elizabeth (Betty) Davies, a daughter Sarah DiCamillo (Ray), three grandsons Justin (Barbie), Nicholas (Erin), and Christopher, and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a stepson Stephen White (Lisa), and three granddaughters Kari, Alexandra, and Natalie. He is further survived by close cousins Arthur Davies (Joan), England, and John Allsop (Christine), France.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be given to Christ Church Outreach at Christ Church Christiana, P.O Box 3510, Wilmington, DE 19807, (christchurchde.org) or The Helen Graham Cancer Center, 4701 Ogletown-Stanton Road, Newark, DE 19713 (giving.christianacare, org)
