Norman W. Todd of Wilmington, Delaware, died October 12, 2023, age 94, at Christiana Care-AccentCare Hospice Center, Wilmington Hospital, after a brief illness.
Norm, as he was known, was born in Lafayette, Indiana, to Marion and Eve Todd. He graduated from Purdue University where he met his future wife, Jerry. During their 56 years of marriage (until her death in 2007), Norm and Jerry shared a lifelong love of music, singing and theater. They were lifetime members of The Brandywiners, Ltd., and active in numerous other community theater groups. They appeared on stage together and separately in various productions and worked behind the scenes. They sang in local church choirs. They were original members of The Brandywiners Chorale, with Norm continuing to participate for over 25 years. A highlight of their singing life was joining the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and being a part of its European tour after moving to Canada for DuPont.
Norm also enjoyed racket sports. In younger years he played squash during lunch hour at the Wilmington YMCA. Then he took up tennis. After retirement, he played in a senior tennis league at the DuPont Country Club and was part of a winning foursome.
Norm was a chemical engineer and had a nearly 40-year career with DuPont, mostly in the Wilmington area. He was involved in all phases of the plastics business including the market introduction of several new products. Field assignments from DuPont took Norm and his family to Toronto, Canada; Detroit; and Hong Kong. While employed at DuPont, Norm expanded his education by earning two master’s degrees at the University of Delaware.
Norm is survived by his three daughters: Elizabeth Lambert (Michael), Dorothy George and Virginia Todd (Stan Markwalder); his granddaughter Cassandra McCallum (Bradley); great grandchildren Cadence and Raleigh; step grandson Paul Lambert (Lisa) and step great grandson Ryan. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Jane Todd, and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his wife Jerry, his brothers David and Chuck, and his sister Joan Swan.
