Mark Joseph Lafferty

Mark J. Lafferty, Sr. passed away at the age of 62 in his Hockessin home on August 25, 2023 surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer.

Mark was born in 1960 in Kaolin, PA and grew up surrounded by his large family. Mark started at a young age for the love of cars, trucks and anything with wheels. He had a passion for nascar, especially Dale Earnhardt Sr. Over the years, his collection of cars and car parts took over every inch of space he could find. He had a knack for finding the rare gems in old barns or hidden in the bushes. You could always find him either burning rubber, hanging out at the shop, eating a good home cooked meal with his family or in his dirt field.

He started his own topsoil business in the late 70s which really took off after his son was old enough to see over the steering wheel. He became the second-generation mushroom grower after he took over the family business in 1988.

He met his wife, Susan Nileski Lafferty in 1984 whom he shared 39 years of marriage with and had 3 children. Mark truly lived life to the fullest. He had a unique ability to reach people in a deep and positive way. He will be missed by many family members and lots of buddies.

Mark is survived by his wife, Susan Lafferty; children Arlene, Marlena and Mark Lafferty Jr.; 5 grandchildren, Shanelle and Michael Hammond Jr, Anthony, Delaney and Kody Tjaden; a host of uncles, aunts and cousins; He was predeceased by his father Francis A. Lafferty, his mother Arlene B. Lafferty, his siblings Frank Lafferty Jr., Janet Lafferty, Donald Lafferty and Kevin Lafferty.

Mr Mark was a Legend ! He taught me so much of what I know about cars, family, business and just being a man. When I was a little kid, I would have my mom drive me past his place so I could see what kinda cars he had at the time. When I was about 10 or 11, I rode my bike up there and told him I just wanted to look at stuff. He was so nice to me. He showed me all kindof stuff and told me stories I still haven’t forgotten until this day !! That was 38 ago! I could go on forever. I’m just so glad we got to hang out a lot in the last year up until a few weeks ago .. I miss you buddy. You were one of my favorite people in the world!
