Maria Irena (Yasinsky) Murowany

Maria Irena (Yasinsky) Murowany passed away on May 13, 2019 at her home in Greenville, Delaware. She was born in Stanislawów, Poland (now Ukraine) on January 25, 1932, as a displaced person, she immigrated to America in 1948 and became a naturalized citizen. She met the love of her life (and future husband), Anthony Murowany in Millville, NJ while attending Mass at her brother-in-law’s church, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Maria and Anthony were married shortly thereafter and were married for over 65 years until his death on November 15, 2016.

Maria Yasinsky Murowany graduated magna cum laude from the Philadelphia Musical Academy (now University of the Arts) in 1971 and sat on the board of her cherished teaching institution for decades. She had a great passion for the arts and was very charitable not only to up and coming young artists and musicians but to forgotten composers both in her native country (Ukraine) and in her beloved America.

Maria gave back to the communities she lived in ~ both Millville, NJ and Wilmington, DE. She was honored in 1966 by B’Nai B’rith in promoting inter-community dialogue. She served on the boards such as the local chapter of People to People, Delaware’s U.S.–U.S.S.R. exchange, as well as several other non-profits.

She was a philanthropist supporting institutions from the Library of Congress, Philadelphia Art Museum, University of the Arts, Ukrainian Museum, to the Kosciusko Foundation, as well as countless other causes.

Maria started her own business promoting travel in the early 1990’s to Eastern Europe. She had one of the largest tour companies going especially Ukraine, Russia and Poland. She, however, did not forget the newly freed countries of Eastern Europe. In the 1990s, she and her husband underwrote the costs of 40-foot ship containers of clothing, medical equipment and other needed supplies.

She was a business owner, community activity and philanthropist. Maria spoke in six languages and sang in ten. Whatever the roles she chose to take, it was carried out with great style and substance.

She is survived by her son, Mark and his wife, Rose of Wilmington, Delaware.

She is also survived by her daughter, Christine Murowany-Hidell and her husband, Timothy Hidell Sr. (of Wilmington, Delaware and Dallas, Texas), and their four sons: (i) Timothy Jr. and his wife, Ashlee; (ii) Anthony and his wife, Jessica; (iii) Nicholas and his new bride, Emily; and (iv) Arthur. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren.

Vichnaya Pamyat! Eternal is Her Memory!

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to the Delaware Community Foundation (Murowany Memorial Fund), PO Box 1636, Wilmington, DE 19899.
