Margot H. Kuniholm died on December 19, 2024 at the age of 94. She was the daughter of Marguerite and H. Walton Herring.
Born in 1930, she grew up in New Canaan, Connecticut and graduated from New Canaan Country Day School and St. Mary’s School on the Hudson. She received a B.S. in education from Wheelock College in Boston and taught school for three years in Maryland while her husband John was stationed at the Pentagon and served in the Army.
Margot met John when he was attending Harvard Law School and they were married in 1954 at St. Mark’s Church in New Canaan. Three years later, they moved to Delaware where they raised their four children before moving to Chadds Ford, PA in 1975. Margot joined the board of trustees of the Children’s Beach House in 1966, a position she held proudly for forty years. As a board member, she was dedicated to their mission of serving children in need in Delaware. Margot was also an active member of Christ Church where she volunteered with the children’s choir, Christmas Pageant, Greenshow and altar guild.
Margot enjoyed playing tennis, bridge, and working in the garden. She and John shared a love of the ocean and the beach, both in Westport Point, MA and Sanibel Island, FL. They enjoyed long walks, often at Longwood Gardens, and had a shared appreciation of the opera. Margot liked to entertain and had many happy gatherings on their spacious hilltop deck in Chadds Ford. Margot’s children were the focus of her life and she and John spent most holidays and vacations with the family. She also loved her many dogs, especially her last canine companion, Buddy.
Margot was a member of the Junior League, the Wilmington Skating Club, the Society of Mayflower Descendents, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of Delaware, the Wilmington Country Club and Baker’s Beach Club in Westport Point, MA.
In her later years, glaucoma prevented Margot from continuing many of her favorite activities but she always kept an optimistic attitude, adopting new pastimes such as audiobooks and trivia. While her eyesight failed, her sharp mind and sense of humor allowed her to have a high quality of life and remain socially active. Her courageous and compassionate nature was felt by her family and friends until her death.
Margot is survived by her four children, Tom (Terry), Julie (John), Nancy and Wendy (JB), 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband John, brother Jim Herring, his wife Phyllis, and son-in-law, Craig Aronhalt.
Margot and her family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Stonegates Health Center for their loving care and devotion, especially to her nurses, Heather, Jessica and Marie. Her days were filled with joy thanks to her trivia pal, Paula, her longest dearest friend, Eleanor, and her neighbor across the hall, Alan, who passed away last year.
The family will gather this summer by the ocean for a private memorial for Margot and John.
Any donations can be made to the Children’s Beach House in Lewes, Delaware.
