Lawrence Alden Thurrell

Lawrence Alden Thurrell

In his own words: Larry Thurrell stopped looking down at the grass the 18th of March 2022. As in life, he was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing.

He was born in Wolfeboro, NH in 1936 the youngest of four brothers, Robert (d. 2007), Philip (d. 2005), and Roger (d. 2015). Larry attended Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro and went on to attend the University of Maine where he obtained a BS in Chemical Engineering. Being raised on a poultry farm, he became resourceful in accomplishing whatever had to be done and that attitude prevailed throughout his life.

After moving to Wilmington, DE to work for Hercules, he married Helen Czerniakowski (d. 2012) and together they had four children and 12 grandchildren: Marian Thurrell and her husband, Bob Winslow, and their children Monica, Paul, and Andrew; Lars, his wife, Janice, and their daughter, Elizabeth, and her husband, Sean Buckley; Julianne and her husband, Reynolds Dods, and their children Jason and wife, Austin, Kara, Patrick and wife, Sabrina Reyes-Dods, Matthew, and Margaret; and Amy and her children Megan, Adam, and Bennett. All were a joy to both Helen and Larry. Larry also leaves his companion, Rosemary FitzGerald, of Landenberg, PA and Orono, ME.

While his marketing career with Hercules and associated companies began in Wilmington, it later took the family to Boston, Chicago, Charlotte, and Cleveland. The family returned to Wilmington in 1976. Larry retired from Himont in 1993 and worked as a consultant for several years.

Extracurricular activities included Hercules Country Club Board, The Center for the Creative Arts, Friends of the Hockessin Library, Friends of Auburn Heights Preserve, and New Castle County Board of Elections. He received the Red Clay Volunteer Award in 2013, and the Hockessin Library Reading Garden was named for him in 2021.

Condolences

    Rachel Fowler writes,
Remembering the welcome I was given by Larry into his household as an international student from the UK, first as an undergraduate on an exchange scheme and subsequently when I returned to the University of Delaware as a Masters student. Larry's love of life and challenge to give anything a go has remained with me.
