Katina Galanakis

Katina Galanakis, 91, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday December 1, 2024.  Katina was born in Athens, Greece in 1933.  She emigrated to the United States with her husband, John, and their three daughters in 1970.  Together they built a life here, in a land foreign to them in both language and customs.  They owned a tailor shop on North Market Street in Wilmington, Delaware for many years.  They were loved by the community and helped many in need.  Every summer she would return to her beloved Greece, she loved going to the beach and swimming in the beautiful Greek waters.

She was a pillar of strength, overcoming many obstacles in life.  Words simply cannot describe what kind of woman she was.  She never watched, she was a woman of action, never stopping until her final days. Katina was a true Matriarch; she held the compass that navigated the family.  She was always there to care for her loved ones, gave her advice and always had an opinion.  Her faith was very important to her, she loved to attend church services and celebrate all religious holidays with her loved ones.  An avid cook, her house was always ready to entertain visitors.  Nobody ever left her house hungry, and if they were just passing by, she always managed to send them home with something.  Everyone who crossed paths with her is truly blessed.

Katina is survived by her sister, Barbara.  Her daughters Ourania (Michael) and Julie (Bill).  Her grandchildren, Tina (Juan Carlos), John (Athina), Pella (Andreas), Theo (Elizabeth), and Yianni.  Her great grandchildren, Lia (Joey), Sophia, PJ, and Michael.  Her great-great grandson, Luka.  Katina was preceded in death by her husband John and her daughter Betty.

Her greatest accomplishment in life was her family.  The love she felt and received from them was priceless to her.  May her memory be eternal.

Katina, My parents moved back to Greece the year after I got married. Having married out of my culture and with no relatives close to me, I was in culture shock, and I was lost. You took me in. You kept me in my culture. You adopted my kids and my husband. You kept me in my faith. You taught me by your example. You taught me so much! You were so generous with your love! I THANK you for this. You were so happy to be around people! Everyone you met was invited to your home. No one who entered your home ever left without eating. When someone didn’t want something, you searched until you found something else, bringing more and more to the table. You had a big heart and you showed it with your offerings. You were a happy soul. Happy to have people around you and happy to please others. One couldn’t just leave your house without a packet of food and without you following them to their car to say one more thing and one more goodbye. How many people, like me, have you embraced? We all love you and grieve for loss and will miss your smiling face terribly! I know you’re in a better place and with your loved ones that went before you. We will meet again. Memory eternal!
