Kathleen Stowe Manns

Kathleen Stowe Manns of Selbyville, DE (formerly Wilmington, DE) passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family after a brief illness on July 13, 2023.  She was born in Darby, PA in 1952 to John and Agnes Stowe (Higgins) and raised in Bethel Township, PA where she attended St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School and Notre Dame High School. She graduated from Neumann University with her Bachelors and Master’s degrees.

Kathy was deeply devoted to her faith and served as an advocate for Catholic education.  She started her teaching career at Holy Saviour St. John Fischer School in Linwood, PA in 1983.  After moving to Wilmington, DE, she joined St. Mary Magdalen Catholic School in 1985 first as a teacher, coach of the softball team and advisor to the science Olympiad team, eventually becoming vice principal.  She retired to the beach in 2018 but quickly started a “part time” role teaching middle school at Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic School in Berlin, MD.  Kathy became the interim principal at MBS in December of 2019 and served until 2021 helping the school adapt and adjust to the challenges of Covid in education.  She retired again but was a continued presence in Catholic schools serving as a substitute teacher at SMM, MBS, and Saints Peter and Paul in West Chester, PA until her illness.

She loved Wildwood, shelling at the beach, and her Philadelphia Phillies, but the most important aspect of Kathy’s life was her family, especially her grandchildren.  She loved to take them on adventures and bring magic into their world.

Kathy is survived by her husband of 41 years, Geoffrey Manns, her son Edward and his wife Denise, her daughter Jennifer and her husband Heath, and her beloved grandchildren, Caleb, Tessa, Nora, and Collin.  She is also survived by her brother Charles and his wife Sara as well as her niece, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.  Kathy had a way of making friends that became family and leaves behind many that will miss her greatly.

A Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 21, 2023 at 11:00 am at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 7 Sharpley Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. Interment will follow at St. Thomas the Apostle Cemetery, Chester Heights, PA.

    S. LaVerne King writes,
Kathy was a wonderful companion in Catholic education. She was ever ready to share ideas that would better all schools of the diocese. It was a delight to work with her as together we strived to help both “ new schools” thrive. Kathy and her beloved family will be remembered in prayer. May you find peace in knowing she is wrapped in the warm embrace of Jesus’ love and mercy as she is welcomed into His heavenly kingdom. May you each know the love and support of family and friends. We send our deepest condolences to all of you. Kathy was a sweet, fun, sometimes naughty but always wonderful woman. She was a gift to everyone who got to spend time with her. Heaven must be a little happier place now even though we are so sad.

Geoff, I was so shocked & sad to hear of Kathy’s passing. We became good friends in 1980 when I started work at Garnet Valley Administration office with her. Then I was happy I introduced you two at the St Patrick’s dance at Talleyville Fire Company Hall. You two made a wonderful couple! Wow, 41 years of marriage and a wonderful loving family! R I P Kathy!🙏

Our Notre Dame Moylan PA classmates join in prayer. May Kathy’s family, friends and school communities feel God’s presence during this time. I spoke with Kathy in 2021. We were hoping she could get to our 50+1 Reunion. The timing didn’t work. But she shared how life had been good to her; how she loved helping her students in her role many roles; and how grateful she was to be an ND grad. I won’t be in town for Kathy’s services but my prayers will be with you. Mary Ann Corbett ND Moylan PA Class of 1970

Many great memories of Kathy as a wonderful friend, neighbor and educator of our two daughters at St Mary Magdalen. I recall fondly her outspoken approach. You always knew where she stood on issues ranging from our mutual hatred of MRI tests to modern education challenges. We’ll miss her stopping at our house in Swann Keys while she and Geoff walked the dog(s). Conversations could last well past the street lights coming on. I know her strong faith has carried her to a better place.

I am so sorry for your loss. Kathy’s mother and mine (Annabelle Duffy Sissons)were first cousins, but our generation lost touch. We were in different circles in high school, but I admired her. May she Rest in God’s Peace. I know Kathy will be greatly missed. May your memories help to easy your sorrow.

Kathleen was an amazing person and someone I was proud to call family. Our mothers were sisters and we had reunited over social media for the past few years. I will miss our chats about childhood memories and the sharing of old photos. My deepest condolences to family and friends. She will be greatly missed but I’m sure she is in heaven surrounded in love by all the Higgins sisters.
