Katherine A. Spitz

Katherine A. Spitz, age 97, died July 3, 2018 in her apartment at the Country House in Greenville, DE, with both her daughters at her side.

Mrs. Spitz was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1921, the daughter of Frieda and Gustave Apel. She was a graduate of the Metropolitan Hospital School of Nursing in New York City. Mrs. Spitz served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps from 1943 to 1947 achieving the rank of Captain. She was stationed at a field hospital in England, where she tended soldiers injured on D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge and other conflicts. She later was stationed in France and Berlin. Mrs. Spitz served in the Army Nurse Corps Reserve from 1947 to 1953. As a civilian, she worked in the dispensary at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.

Mrs. Spitz enjoyed playing golf at the Wilmington Country Club for many years. She also loved gardening, traveling and doing needlepoint. An avid reader and audio book listener, she had volunteered in the Country House library.

She is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Marilyn and George Ruggles of Lewes, DE, and Sandra and Robert Bauers of Pottstown, PA. Her husband, Robert L. Spitz, died in 1997.

She was privately buried with military honors in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 16, 2018 in the Danby Chapel at the Country House, 4830 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, DE 19807.

In lieu of flowers, she requested that contributions be made to Camphill Special School, 1784 Fairview Road, Glenmoore, PA 19343.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 16, 2018 in the Danby Chapel at the Country House, 4830 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, DE 19807.
