John Joseph Keegan, Jr.

John Joseph Keegan, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1956, John was the eldest son of John and Regina Keegan.

John will always be remembered for his humor, intellect, boundless curiosity, and friendship. He was a loving brother who always enjoyed family gatherings and his relationships with friends, who called him Johnny.

Graduating from the University of Delaware in 1978, John earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and received a scholarship to attend the University of Michigan’s Graduate Engineering program. He had a career with Dupont as an Electrical Engineer, where he received numerous accolades and was awarded multiple patents for his work in the component design for film processing.

John was an experienced “ham” radio operator and over the years had contacted hundreds of other operators around the globe. He also enjoyed research in family genealogy, and enthusiastically shared the information he researched.

Family was especially important to John, who affectionately called him Joey. His broad knowledge generated lively conversations at every family gathering and he would thoroughly enjoy playing hours of cards with his nieces. Joey was loving and caring, as well as a wonderful friend who will be missed by all who knew him. He was as kind as he was brilliant.

Sorry to read this in the U of D alumni news. Knew John well as we met during freshman orientation and remained friends as part of the “Brain Trust” of the EE class of ‘78. I remember his humor, love of fun, brilliance and the nights I came over and he showed me his ham radio set up. Pax vobiscum.

I was sorry to read of John's passing in the U of D alumni magazine. John and I went to Catholic grade school together. He was a favorite of the teachers with a bright smile and intellect to match. John was an extremely nice person with a great sense of humor. I'm grateful that John was my classmate.

Childhood friends, neighborhood friends, We went to kindergarten together, same carpool. Sledding down Holly Lane hill, walking the "Indian Trail", playing in the basement of every friends' homes. At the UofD he introduced me to a friend who went on to introduce me to my husband, Jeff. Am not very connected on the social network so didn't learn of Joey's passing until today. Late, but sincere condolences.

I just found out about Joey's passing. He was one of our Centerville, DE "gang". As kids we did all kinds of fun things together. I remember Joey for his love of science, especially tinkering with anything electrical. And his love of ham radios. Unfortunately I never stayed in contact with him after graduating from the University of Delaware. This is certainly very sad news.

Just finding out about Joey's passing from the alumni magazine as well. Grew up with Joey in Centerville, DE and always enjoyed our football games, sledding, and his ham radio exploits along with neighbor Richard Lackey. Reconnected with him at the University of Delaware as he lived across the hall from me Freshman year. "Buster" as he was known to his college dorm buddies had a great sense of humor and will certainly be missed.
