Joan Ross Bolling

Joan Ross Bolling, age 95, of Wilmington, Delaware recently passed away peacefully surrounded by her family.  Born in Wilmington, she was the daughter of the late Donald and Wilhelmina Ross.  Joan attended Tower Hill School before graduating from Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut.

Joan and her late husband, Robert H. Bolling, Jr., began their marriage in Philadelphia and then returned to Wilmington to raise their family.  She and Bob enjoyed many outdoor activities together, including hunting, fishing, and golfing.

Joan was the happiest when surrounded by family and friends playing games.  She especially loved gin rummy with her grandchildren and competitive duplicate bridge with her dedicated bridge partners. She achieved life master status from the ACBL in 1986.

During her life Joan was involved in the Children’s Bureau of Delaware and an active member of the Vicmead Hunt Club and the Wilmington Country Club. She was a long-time supporter of many community organizations in Delaware, the eastern shore of Maryland, and Nantucket, Massachusetts.

She is survived by her children, Mina Moyer (Timothy, deceased), Ginny Bayless (Rob), and Bob Bolling (Martha); her grandchildren, Lindsay, Timothy Jr., Rob III, Paige, Liza, Hunter and Ross; and her seven great-grandchildren.  Joan was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Jr., and is survived by her sister, Sheila.

The family sends heartfelt thanks to all those who cared for her in the last few years.  The burial and memorial service will be private.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joan’s memory to the Nantucket Conservation Foundation (nantucketconservation.org), 118 Cliff Road, Nantucket, MA 02554 or the Wounded Warrior Project (support.woundedwarriorproject.org), P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.

    Sonya Patronik writes,
My mother Helen spent 2 summers in Nantucket working for the Bollings along with our neighbor Mrs. Swan. Mom was impressed by their kindness to her, a rookie at that work, and enjoyed telling how they taught her how to boil lobster. May Mrs. Bolling's memory be eternal.

I remember Joan fondly from my childhood days on the Ross estate, as a playmate with her children. So many happy memories again as we now live back in Greenville.

Dear Mina, although it's been ages I send my sympathies to you and your family at the loss of your lovely sporty mother. She was always fun and kind to me. Our mothers were golf teammates at WCC and fierce competitors ! On more than one afternoon I can remember my mother arriving home talking about how your mother saved the team match that day. I can see your mother with a cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other loudly laughing. Such fond memories. Take care.
