Joan D. Nelson

Joan Diane VanLeuven Nelson, age 87, of Hockessin, DE, passed away on Wednesday, February 9, 2022. She was preceded in death by Firman, her beloved husband of 61 years.

Joan proudly achieved her Master’s degree in nursing from the University of Delaware mid-career, while remaining a devoted wife, mother, and respected nursing instructor at Delaware Technical and Community College. Combining devotion to her faith and community with a passion for taking care of people, she then became a Parish Nurse. She found her calling by integrating her faith and nursing skills to provide higher levels of wellness, specifically for the geriatric and indigent communities.

Joan was a supportive, encouraging, and loving wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She cherished her children, grandchildren and most recently a great granddaughter. In addition to an enduring love for her family, Joan was passionate about her church fellowship at Hockessin United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling the world with her husband, playing bridge, being a member of the church knitting group, reading, crossword puzzles, dining out with friends and family, and her beloved companion Riley, her King Charles Cavalier Spaniel.

Joan is survived by brothers Bill and Bruce (Joyce), daughters Caryn (Gary) and Sally, son Steven (Marisa), granddaughters Katie (Brian) and Emma (Ty) and great granddaughter Grace.

I loved Joan! We were Neighbors in Whitebriar and attended HUMC together for years! While I literally ran into Firm at DelCastle park on our respective jogs, and he encouraged me to keep going, it was Joan who nurtured me as a new mom (years ago!). I didn’t have parent folks around so she visited me regularly to help me be sane. She cared for other neighbors as regularly and set the example for me to follow (especially with Melissa and Elwood Green). I am not a nurse, but caring for others looked so attractive on Joan that others (me included) wanted and did step up. Joan and Firm were regular volunteers with our Family Promise ministry at HUMC for as long as they could. My kids (Jordan mostly) played with Joan’s grandkids when they visited. Joan truly loved God and loved neighbors… literally and actively. A life so well lived!

We met Joan (& Sally) at Willow Brooke Court at Cokesbury, while visiting daily at lunch. Sally had such a calming effect on Joan. The care staff respected Joan and shared stories of her teaching nursing to some of them. Peace to Joan and condolences to Sally and family.

    Margaret Polly writes,
Aunt Joan has been my godmother since my birth in 1955. She never missed sending me a birthday card and we talked on the phone whenever I had her #. She was awesome to me, and she and my mom were best friends as well as cousins. She organized family gatherings which were not only fun, but we got to know her kids. It was fun to feel part of a large clan! She gave me counselling when I would ask her a million questions, before I knew anything about Counselors. She even sent me a photo from our Cape May, NJ gathering. I have lost touch with all of you but would love to reconnect. Mom died 3 yrs.ago, and Dad died July 4th 2021. What a loss for all of you. Sending all my love and prayers, Margie Polly
