Jane P. Maroney

Jane P. Maroney, age 98, of Wilmington, DE, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 28, 2021.

Born in Boston, Jane grew up in South Hamilton, MA, the daughter of the late John Henry Perkins and Mary Boland Perkins.  She completed her formal education at Radcliffe College and the Katherine Gibbs School.  After serving divergent causes during WWII at home, she moved to New York City and then to Washington DC pursuing her passion for international policy development.  After working in Europe for several years after the war, she married Dr. John W. Maroney, a pediatrician in Wilmington. Together they had two children, both of whom followed their father’s path into medicine.

Jane entered the local political scene in 1976 in the gubernatorial campaign of Pete duPont and subsequently became a candidate for state representative and served with distinction for 20 years as a member of the Delaware House of Representatives (1978 – 1998).  As a Representative, Jane focused on a leadership role in public health and safety issues especially regarding the welfare of children and families, both on a national level as well as in Delaware.  In the House, she chaired the Health and Human Development Committee and the Delaware Family Law Commission.  She served on the Legislative Joint Finance Committee and on the House Education Committee.

After leaving public office, she maintained her focus on the wellbeing of children and families and became actively involved in the not-for-profit world of policy development as a member of many boards and commissions including the Christiana Care Health System, the College of Health Sciences at the University of Delaware, the Women and Children’s Leadership Council, Wilmington Montessori School, Chesapeake Bay Girl Scouts, March of Dimes, and a variety of other organizations.

She was especially proud of her long and dedicated involvement with Connecting Generations, a non-profit focusing on intergenerational relationships between a caring adult and young children with a focus on mentoring.

Her awards were too numerous to list but included the Governor’s Award of the First State, University of Delaware’s Order of Merit, the Delaware Women’s Hall of Fame, Easter Seals of Delaware, the Wilmington Senior Center’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Early Childhood Champion lifetime achievement award of the Delaware Early Childhood Council, and the Miriam E. Gilman Award from the 21st Century Fund for Delaware’s Children.

She was a vibrant personality, an excellent listener, and prided herself in always being open to a variety of points of view, making connections between people and organizations. She touched many lives through her advocacy and personal involvement, and immensely enjoyed time with her friends and family.

Jane was predeceased by her husband John Walker Maroney, M.D.  She is survived by a daughter, Jane M. El Dahr, M.D. of New Orleans, LA and a son, John W. Maroney Jr, M.D. (Kerstin Maroney) of Portland, OR as well as four grandchildren: CJ and Sami El Dahr and Nicole and Brooke Maroney.

Many thanks to the nurses and staff of Christina Care and the Country House for their loving care and kindness.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jane’s name to Connecting Generations, 100 W. 10th St., Suite 1115, Wilmington, DE 19801 (http://connecting-generations.org).

Jane was, and remains, a beacon of light and hope for everyone who had the privilege of coming within her orbit. She was perhaps the best listener I've ever met and her compassionate and empathety energized so many people. These are qualities that seem to be missing in these chaotic times, when 'the other' is quickly overlooked. Jane was the quintessential politician by representing all the people She made Delaware a better place to live through her tireless efforts, whether in front or behind the scenes, with that signature twinkle in her eyes and her winsome smile. May the many wonderful memories comfort your family and her legions of friends. I just. foresee that her legacy will remain in the hearts and deeds of generations to come.

I was incredibly sad to hear the news of Jane's passing. I had the pleasure of crossing paths with Jane at Wilmington Montessori School, where she served on the advisory board. I looked forward to our annual (pre-COVID) visitation days, when I got the opportunity to visit our classrooms with Jane and talk to her about the latest news at our school. She was truly interested in seeing everything and engaging with the children, and I was inspired by her intelligence, wit, energy and passion for education each time I spoke with her. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have spent time with her, even briefly - she will be missed!

I was saddened and touched when I heard of Jane's passing. I worked with Jane in various capacities for over 35 years. She was a force to be reckoned with and a true advocate for children and families. One of my favorite memories of Jane is when I visited her at the Country Home to go over information for her recognition for the 21st Century Fund. We ended up going over pictures she wanted to put on her computer, so we talked and laughed for 2 hours as I uploaded pictures for her. Jane was a great public servant, humanitarian and a lady of grace. She will be sorely missed. My sincere condolences to the family.

Jane was a mentor and friend during my time at the National Conference of State legislatures back in the 1980s when she was a state legislator. She helped launch a national interest in children's issues through her compassionate advocacy for children and families and deep knowledge and political acumen. We recently reconnected to plan a reunion with the current children and families program staff at NCSL. Jane was such an inspiration and her incredible wit, energy and humor always carried the day. She will live forever in my heart and I am so grateful that our paths crossed.

What does it mean to lose a friend? Losing Jane has left a huge hole in my heart, in my daily life and in the veil covering this earth plane I still live on. The time we spent together and there were many, sometimes 3 to 5 days at a time, being foodies on our travels looking for softshell crabs to eat in season. Hanging out in different places in Delaware by the water. Laughing a lot and sometimes crying but always sharing with great authenticity. We were a gift to each other and we knew it. We loved to listen to each other stories about our unusual life journeys. we both had so many interesting experiences to share. She was like a big sister to me even though we were 28 years apart in age. we could talk about anything. Spiritual matters, politics, how to cook asparagus the right way and yes all the planning for so many trips to Trader Joe’s and the wine store so we could create magic with our next gourmet adventure. The last time I saw her was at Thanksgiving when she planned an amazing spread. I polished her silver and ran numerous errands for the meal and then we consumed a wonderful feast with two invited neighbors. Her best China dishes graced the table with great flair. My memories are secure as I saved our email exchange from the last decade. Her writings were such a treat to receive. We stayed in touch as I traveled the globe bringing her back ‘salt’ from many different countries. Her great pleasure was to be cook with different salts. So what is it like to lose a friend? Hell. And I can hear her laughing in the ethers as I say that and her response to me “You have not lost me.” That is my solace. I miss you Jane.
