James Joseph Barbato

James J. (Bart) Barbato, age 59, of Hockessin, Del., passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Christiana Hospital after a brief illness.

Jim was born in Wilmington, son of the late Joseph and Florence Unitowski Barbato. He graduated from St. Hedwig’s Parochial School in 1973 and DelCastle Technical high School in 1977. He had a 30 year career in the appliance service industry, starting with ABC Sales & Service right after high school. For almost 20 years he worked for Caleco of West Chester, PA before starting his own business, Barbato and Son. Before his retiring in 2012, Jim had always taken care of his friends and families appliance repairs and rarely charged the elderly, other than parts.

He was an avid car enthusiast and enjoyed both fast and classic cars. He was the proud owner of a 2001 BMW Z3, his Bond Car, and loved polishing it for car shows.

Jim’s first love and devotion in life was his wife of 26 years, Mary Jo. They were inseparable, both sharing the passion for travel to all destinations hot and sunny. They travelled the Caribbean and Mexico extensively as well as enjoyed much time at their summer home in Ocean View, DE. Their final dream trip was to the Amalfi Coast of Italy this coming December.

Jim was truly a family man, he loved spending time at home with family, eating pasta several nights a week, barbecuing by the pool and having his wife and grandchildren around him to enjoy it.

In addition to his parents, he is pre-deceased by his sister, Rosemary Barbato. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Kok Barbato, his son Joseph Barbato, his daughter, Dena Lundy-Padovani (Steven), four grandchildren; Stephen Lundy, Angelo, Evelina and Nicholas Padovani, his siblings; John Barbato (Kathleen), Matthew Barbato (Dawn), JoAnne Barbato Rispoli (Tom) and Dorothy Anne Womer, nieces and nephews are; John Jr., Vito, Bella, Patrick, Jennifer and Bobby, and many cousins.

Funeral Services

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017, 11:00 AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. A viewing will be held Thursday evening, September 7, 2017 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 7230 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. Interment will be private.
