James H. Anderson

Beloved husband, father, adoring grandfather, and proud great-grandfather passed away peacefully on July 1, 2020.

Our superhero, Pop-pop was kind, generous, funny, loving, smart, hard working, a natural leader and determined. He embodied his favorite saying, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going”.

Jim was born in Catawba Station, Ohio on December 5, 1931 and raised in Springfield, Ohio. He graduated from Springfield High School where he met his beloved wife Phyllis Potts.  They married Dec 23, 1951, and enjoyed a long and loving marriage until Phyllis’s passing in 2012.

He served as a Seabee in the Navy and traveled all over the world.  After the Navy, he attended Ohio State University graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1960. He moved his family to Newark, DE and began his esteemed career with the DuPont Company working at various sites including Louviers, Experimental Station and downtown offices. As VP of General Services, he had exciting opportunities like bringing the McDonalds LPGA to Wilmington, overseeing the renovation of the Hotel DuPont, selecting Broadway plays for the DuPont Playhouse and managing the DuPont Country Club. He was known to say, “Don’t tell anyone, but I have the best job in the world!”

Jim loved music, particularly Willie Nelson. He spent many hours expertly whistling a tune while tinkering on his latest project. A naturally gifted athlete, Jim enjoyed many sports.   He played competitive softball well into his 50’s. He was most passionate about golf and played with a group of cherished, lifelong friends and couples who traveled the world together.  He and Phyllis spent their retirement years splitting their time between Chadds Ford, PA and Port Charlotte, Fl. They enjoyed many happy rounds at the Wilmington Country Club and Kingsway Country Club with their dear friends the Longeneckers and McCumbers.

Another great passion of Jim’s in retirement was as the patriarchal icon of Va La Vineyards in Avondale, PA, owned by his daughter Karen and son-in-law Anthony.  In his inimitable way, the “Grand Poobah” immersed himself in all aspects of the business, evolving from a novice into a respected expert. Many have remarked that his one-of-a-kind wine tasting experience served as the catalyst for their own journey into the world of wine. Jim’s presence can be felt everywhere in the tasting room from his hand-crafted tasting bar to the most level wood floors ever built.

Jim is predeceased by his beloved wife Phyllis. He is also predeceased by his siblings Ruby, John and Ed as well as his sister-in-law Liz LePera. He is survived by his four children…Sheryl (George) Worsham of Greensboro, NC, Brian (Sandra) Anderson of Flower Mound, TX, Kelly Anderson (Ken Chapman) of Avondale, PA and Karen (Anthony) Vietri of Avondale, PA; his six adoring grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by siblings Georgia, Jane, Tom and Chris and brothers-in-law Byron Potts, and Alex LePera and sister-in-law Nancy Reed. Jim’s many nieces and nephews will miss him greatly as well.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date when pandemic restrictions have lifted. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to a favorite charity of Jim and Phyllis: Easter Seals of Delaware 61 Corporate Circle, New Castle, DE 19720 or The Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, 1901 Rockland Rd. Wilmington, DE 19803

Dear Karen. I was reading about the full life of a lovely sounding man in the News Journal, when I got to part where I saw it was your father. I am very saddened for you and I’m sorry that he is gone. I was very fortunate to meet and talk with your father on my two visits to Va La. Both times we had interesting and enjoyable visits because of his knowledge and pleasant nature. From the interesting life he led, it is certain that he touched the lives of so many people. I marshaled at the LPGA golf several years and may have talked with him there. It sounds like such a full life with many, many adventures. I know he will be dearly missed by many. Patty

The LePera family would like to express just how deeply sorry we were to hear that Uncle Jim passed away. We have so many wonderful memories of him throughout the years...he was an amazing man who always made us feel welcome and made us smile. He seemed to try so hard to make sure we felt like “just part of the Anderson gang.” We are thinking of you through this difficult time and are praying that your broken hearts will once again know peace and that you can find small windows of comfort and bittersweet joys during this incredibly difficult time. We love you all.

    Bob LePera writes,
To Sheryl, Brian, Kelly and Karen - I am so saddened by the passing of Uncle Jim. Growing up, he was my second Father (as was Phyllis my second mother) always providing the same security, advice and family love that you receive from your own parents. He will always be one of the influential men in my life. What a great life he and Phyllis had together, so many memories for you all to cherish. In these last couple of years, it was hard to see Jim but I so enjoyed sitting and talking with him about family, work and, of course, Ohio State football! I will treasure all of the moments I had with the family but now is a time to reflect on Jim - the softball games, the charades matches, the Colorado trip, ice cream, McDonald's, his beautiful whistling, making us a sled run in back of the Thorn Hollow house, cutting my hair and ticking off my Mom, his naps and, of course, his laugh. There are others but I will always remember him as a classy, professional, loving family man and second Father. Someone I always looked up to and always will.

    Patty Brady writes,
So sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I will always remember how during a wine tasting he would tell us that "wine is a living and breathing thing, always changing after opening the bottle." He strategically placed the Campbell Soup coupons in his shirt pocket for a nice little advertisement to any other patrons. Whenever passing his old house in Balmoral, I would always say a prayer that he was doing well. O Loving Father, Source of all life, please accompany Your servant Jim, from this earth, to the Kingdom of heavenly peace, rest, and eternal life that You have prepared for us. Forgive any sins that have been committed, and welcome this departed soul into the joyful embrace of Your never-ending love, Amen.

    Van McGehee writes,
Jim lived a long and prosperous life; however, as a member of management he was a tyrant. He served as General Manager, General Services at DuPont until a reorganization was forcing him to retire. He longed for the vice president for years but it simply was not to be; however, part of his retirement agreement was to be granted vice president title which he held only briefly prior to retirement. Of all the numerous Du Pont company organizations I worked in, Jim was the most tyrannical and feared in my entire career. What a relief to move to another organization.
