Jagadish “Jag” Deshpande

Noted architect and artist, Jagadish “Jag” Deshpande, 79, of Hockessin, DE passed away on February 22, 2025.

Born in Amravati, India, Jag excelled during his early years in school and went on to earn his college degree from the J.J. School of Architecture.

After starting his career in New Delhi, Jag came to the United States in 1970 and began working for high-profile architecture firms in New York City.

Upon moving to Delaware, Jag rapidly made an impact on the local skyline, first as the lead architect at Tetra Tech and later as the head of his own firm. Two of his most notable local projects are the Chase Manhattan building in Wilmington and a modern extension to the Hindu temple in Hockessin.

After retiring from architecture, Jag discovered new talents as both a painter and a teacher. His unique works were exhibited at numerous galleries and shows throughout the greater Philadelphia area, and he shared his love of modern art with countless students at the University of Delaware’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

An avid sportsman, Jag converted his childhood cricket skills into a very competitive tennis game as well as a low handicap on the golf course.

Jag had a zest for life and was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived and missed by wife Kavita, sister Jyoti, brother Shashikant, daughters Disha (Nilus) Mattive and Megha Deshpande (Paul Mahoney), and grandchildren Vela Mattive, Kaya Mahoney, and Kameron Mahoney.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ambadas and Kusum, and brother Shrikant.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11AM on Thursday February 27, 2025 at Chandler Funeral Home at 7230 Lancaster Pike Hockessin, DE 19707.

For Jag's lovely family: What a delightful man and I experienced Jag as an incredible teacher at UD OLLI Abstract Art for many years. Jag eagerly taught with tremendous encouragement for us. Jag always expressed his appreciation of adult students' art pieces, and his critiques led us to become more of the artists we'd hoped to become. Much gratitude for having had our wonderful Jag in our lives. Kaz

Mariam and I were saddened to hear about the untimely passing of Jag who we have known from the 80’s. I knew him better as an instructor in the Abstract Art class at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. A great artist himself, we benefited from his encyclopedic knowledge of the subject, incisive criticism, encouragement and support. I believe God calls the best of us home first. May his soul find rest and his bereaved family consolation.

Jagdish (Jag) Deshpande I have very high regards and respect for Jagdish. His sudden demise has shocked us here in India. Especially in a period of less than 7 months from the sad demise of his two year younger brother Shrikant. Jagdish sponsored our visitor’s visa in 2005, in times when it wasn’t very easy to get the same. I was very much impressed with his art and meticulous way of looking at things and explaining things to the people. A sacred soul in the true sense. We all here will be surely missing him. May his soul rest in peace!!

Jags - as I used to call him was just such a bright light in the lives of the Delaware Valley Marathi community. Although much senior to us in experience, age and wisdom - Jagdish always behaved as a friend, always unassuming, modest and jovial in his behavior. Sangeeta and I are both deeply saddened by his sudden demise. DVMMM has lost a true friend and mentor. Our deepest condolences to Kavita and the family. May his soul Rest in Peace. Om Shanti.
