Herbert Davis, age 91, of Wilmington, DE passed away on February 4, 2022. Herbert was born in Arnold, PA in 1930. He was one of five children of Samuel and Stella Davis.
Herbert graduated from Duquesne University with a B.S. degree in 1951. Working his way through school, Herbert was the first member of the Davis family to attend and graduate from college. After graduation, Herbert served stateside in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
After his stint in the Army, Herbert worked in the aeronautics industry. Settling in Oak Ridge, TN, Herbert met and married the love of his life, Barbara Eleanor Jones. They married on May 19, 1956.
Herbert then attended the University of Virginia School of Law. Upon graduation in 1958, Herbert began practice as a corporate attorney—first for Dow Chemical, then Gulf Oil and finally with Chevron. Herbert’s work and life took the family from Oak Ridge to Charlottesville, VA, Midland, MI, Pittsburgh, PA, San Francisco, CA and Naples, FL.
Upon retirement, Herbert spent as much time with Barbara as he could. He was also an avid reader, listener of classical and jazz music (it was always on in his house) and devoted grandfather. Herbert permanently moved to Wilmington in 2002.
Herbert is survived by his sole remaining sibling, his sister, Sherry Ruffing, and his two children Carrie Davis and her spouse Lisa Levy of Woodstown, NJ, and Eric Davis and his wife Lisa of Wilmington. Herbert has four grandchildren, Madeline Davis, Sophia Davis, Samuel Davis and Maximillian Davis, and many loving nieces and nephews. Herbert was predeceased by his wife, his parents and three siblings, Edward Davis, Amy Lee Kelly and Donald Davis.
Herbert will be sorely missed.
The family plans a graveside service later this year when both Herbert and Barbara, who passed away in 2000, will be joined together once again.
