Helene Krikelis

Helene Krikelis passed away peacefully Saturday, October 20, 2018 to be with her beloved husband Costas.

Helene lived a full and active life right up to the end and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.  Helene graduated from Widener University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology and a Master’s in Education, and went on to work for the DuPont company for over 20 years as a biologist in the agricultural department. Helene had a very active life outside of her career. She performed in Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas at the Arden Gild hall, played the violin for over 20 years with various symphonies through the Delaware music scene, taught English as a second language at the Brandywine Valley Baptist Church, and worked for several years as a Botanist at Longwood Gardens. However, Helene was always at home on the water, and her greatest passion was rowing. Helene spent most of her free time rowing with the Wilmington Rowing Center. The time that Helene spent with the Rowing Center was her favorite time and the place where she made many of her closest friends.

Helene leaves behind three children, Basil (wife Jamie), Maria, and Peter (wife Susan) along with eight grandchildren (Jordan, Alexandria, Jessie, Constantine, Maxwell, Elle, John and Athena).

Funeral Services will be held on Friday October 26, 2018 at 12:00PM at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N. Broom St., Wilmington, DE 19806. Her viewing will start at 11:00AM at the church. Interment will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wilmington Rowing Center at http://wilmingtonrowing.org/donations/

    Anita L Sterling writes,
So sorry to learn about Helene's passing. I only knew her a short time from the Brandywine Pops Orchestra. I enjoyed playing violin with her and getting to know a bit about her. She was a delightful person with many talents and interests.

Karen Turner lit a candle and writes,
Please accept my most heartfelt sympathies for your loss. I had the privilege of meeting Helene through our shared love for rowing. The Head of the Charles 2015 will be my most treasured memory since we traveled and competed together there and spent a lot of time in the car laughing and joking. None of us will ever forget that weekend. Helene will remain in our hearts forever.

Helene was a very special woman. I met Helene a few years ago when I joined WRC. Helene welcomed me and quickly became a person I admired. She was funny, genuine and so full of life. Her spirit will always be with us on the water.
