George Stewart Hoagland

G. Stewart Hoagland, who died August 27, 2018 was born in New York City in 1922, the son of Porter and Marjorie Stewart Hoagland, and lived in Rumson, New Jersey, until World War II. He graduated from Pomfret School in Pomfret, Connecticut, and went on to Yale University. He enlisted in the Yale Naval Aviation Unit after his sophomore year. After earning his commission, he served in the North Atlantic on the U.S.S. Bogue, an escort carrier on anti-submarine duty. Later, he flew with an airborne early warning squadron in the Pacific.

After the war, Stew worked for the Lehigh Navigation Coal Company before joining the DuPont Company where he spent the next thirty years in the Textile Fibers Department in domestic and export marketing.

Stew was predeceased by his wife, the former Cynthia Kimball of Centerville, Delaware, after 54 years of marriage. He is survived by a son, David, of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; a daughter, Alison, of Washington, DC; and his devoted friend, Marilyn Flaherty, of Greenville. The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care he received from the Health Care staff at Stonegates.

Stew, who kept bees as a hobby, was an active conservationist who enjoyed wing shooting, fly fishing, boating, and retriever training. He was a member of The Leash in New York City and the Vicmead Hunt Club in Greenville.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Trout Unlimited or the Delaware Historical Society.

Stew it was a true pleasure meeting you through the Leash and I have very fond memories of several great evenings spent at the club. And also some wonderful times spent on various fly fishing streams too! You will be truly missed my friend. Rest in peace. Robert and Helen Ford Far Hills NJ
