Evelyn Haley

Evelyn Haley, age 79, loving mother and mommom passed away peacefully on March 14, 2021 at her daughter’s home. Evelyn was born in November of 1941 in Wilmington, Delaware, the youngest child to Agnes and Francis McDonnell.

She attended Mount Pleasant High School, raised her four children, and then worked for Delaware Industry for the Blind for 23 years, starting in the warehouse and ending her career as a supervisor. After retirement, she enjoyed taking classes at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute until she took on the role of watching her youngest grandchild for two wonderful years.

Evelyn had a passion for all things health related and planned on living many more years to watch her grandkids grow up. She was an avid reader and loved learning. Evelyn loved music and always had it playing in her house. She was generous with her friends and family. Her children will greatly miss receiving all of the “didn’t know they could live without” QVC and HSN gadgets she loved to buy them. She is remembered as being “the favorite aunt”, lively, fun, strong, young at heart, supportive, always smiling, and loved by so many.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Frank and Donald, and sister Agnes. Evelyn leaves behind her four children, Kelli, Kerry, and David (Jenna) Haley and Amy (John) Crodelle, 8 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, her sister, Marian Cerasari, sister-in-law, Betty McDonnell, as well as, many cousins, nieces and nephews. Evelyn loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and was and will always be their biggest supporter. She is missed dearly.

Special thanks to Delaware Hospice for making her transition pain free and peaceful.

I had the best aunt, with Aunt Evelyn. When I was a young girl. I trusted her with my life. She lost her driver's license due to her eyesight. But, she would still drive us around. I will miss her body on earth. But, I know she is still around us. When we meet again, she and my mom (Agnes) will have perfected their piano skills, which they didn't on earth. She is now one of God's angels!

Evelyn and I go back many years. We met at a Beauty Academy sometime around the late 60s. She was always laughing and making jokes. We lunched every day at Govatos'. She enjoyed people and had many friends. We ventured one weekend to New York for a hair show and met a group of stylists on the train back, sharing their experiences at their Academy. So, we drove to Pennsylvania to check it out. Impressed with our findings, we switched Academies and loved it. Mind you her eye site wasn't great but she drove us every day in her little Volkswagen to PA. She wasn't going to let anything deter us. Close to the end of our training we all had to participate in a styling contest. I used Evelyn as my model. Why not she had a beautifully chiseled face that won me the Trophy. We had so much fun together. Five years later she introduced me to the wonderful man I would eventfully marry. Tom and I have now been married 51 years, thanks to the Lord and Evelyn. She was beautiful, funny and loved her family. Towards the end, she accepted Christ into her heart. She had a good friend at the Blind Commission who helped her understand the scriptures. During our last phone conversation, I could hear the peace in her spirit and burdens lifted. The Bible says, “If you want to share in His Glory, we have to share in His Sufferings,” And she did. We will see you again some day my friend. Much love, Tom & Carol Haley

Dear Kelli, Amy, Kerry and Dave , I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your dear and very loving Mother. I read her obituary and I agree she was a beautiful and very caring and nurturing Mother and Grandmother! She was my friend when we shared carpooling for our children who were attending St. Helena School in the late 1970 s !! She was always a Joyful friend who made carpooling an adventure! I wish to share my feelings with her dear children as I know they are really hurting right now! I have very fond memories of driving Kelli and Amy and Bobby, Maria, and Anthony home from school. Please know your mother was well loved by all who knew her. Please accept my deepest sympathy. My Love to All!

I have known Evelyn for over 20 years from her regular trips to Wellness Plus Delaware. She was constantly learning and asking about health and diet issues. We had many conversations and she was always cheerful and laughing. Her trips on the Dart Bus were daunting yet she kept using them. Many times she got a call that the bus was down in the parking lot waiting for her. It is so very sad to lose her. My sincerely condolences on her loss. She will be missed and has been missed this past year.
