Ethel Mitchell

Ethel McKaig Mitchell (nee Hartman) of Glen Mills, PA passed from this world on December 28, 2017. Ethel, who spent most of her adult life as a resident of Delaware and Florida, was 94 years old.

Ethel Sarah was born on 12 July, 1923 in Allentown, PA, the second daughter of Paul H. Hartman and Ethel (Moseman) Hartman. She grew up in Center Valley, PA and attended Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA.  While attending, she met Chandler Hayes McKaig (a Lehigh attendee), and they married on October 31, 1943 in Friedensville, PA.  Ethel began a career in sales, but then became a homemaker to her and Chandler’s four children.  After her children had grown, she returned to a career in retail sales that she enjoyed very much and was very gifted at.

The most precious and beloved thing in Ethel’s life was her family. She was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Ethel Hartman and her older sister Jean Witherwax.  She is survived and deeply missed by her four children Susan Hersh of West Lebanon, NH., Chandler McKaig of Coatesville, PA., Sandra DiGiacomo (Joseph) of Oxford, PA., and David McKaig (Lissa), of Flagler Beach, Florida.  She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren Justin Hersh (Leslie), Andrea Kannas (John), Diana Paisley (Allen), Jesse Piccolo (Kelsea), Alexander DiGiacomo, Jacquelyn DiGiacomo, Steven McKaig, and Serra McKaig. Ethel also is survived by eleven great-grandchildren.

Ethel gave a fine legacy to all of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was a proud and supportive parent, grandparent, and Mema.  Her family came first in her life, as she is first in our hearts.

So many memories. Ethel had a calming affect, at least on me; it was just so comfortable to be around her. Probably the most likable person anyone could hope to meet. Sincere condolences to Sandy, Joe, Chan, Susan and David, and your families, and to my nieces and nephews, Diana and her family, Jackie and Alex. Much love, Uncle Steve
