Ellen G. Thorn

Ellen departed her loving family on June 27, 2023.

Ellen was born in 1932 in White Plains, NY., daughter of the late Gertrude and Arnold Lieberherr. She was very proud to be a first generation American, after her parents immigrated from Switzerland.

Ellen graduated with honors in 1954 with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Math from Bucknell University. After raising her children, she returned to school and in 1982 earned her RN in Nursing. She worked as an RN at Christiana Hospital for 15 years where she was a dedicated and compassionate nurse.

Ellen’s deepest desire was to help those in need. She was the quintessential volunteer, giving of her time for many years to; Meals on Wheels, The Sunday Breakfast Mission, Aldersgate Church, The Red Cross, and Adopt-A-Family. She choose to live a life of meaningful acts of love and service.

Her family was her pride and joy; she was an amazing mother to her 4 children and the best grandmother and great grandmother. Her children benefitted from her being their Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and homeroom mother. She was her children’s biggest cheerleader and loved them fiercely.

Ellen’s spirit is carried on by her 4 children; Kathy Taylor (Ken), Linda Chicco (Gianni), Jim Thorn (Joanne), Scott Thorn (Mary), as well as 15 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she is pre-deceased by her brother Arnold Lieberherr, Jr. She was truly the heart of our large family and will be dearly missed but always in our minds and hearts.

Services will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Sunday Breakfast Mission, 110 N. Polar St., Wilm., DE 19801.
