Edward T. Stewart

Edward Stewart, 74, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 with his family by his side in Accent Care Hospice Center at Wilmington Hospital.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1949, he was the only child of Thomas E. and Doris (Mitchell) Stewart. Ed (or Eddie as he was known to many) graduated from John Dickinson High School (class of ’67) where he played multiple sports. Many will remember his spinning records at local dances as a member of SelecTronS DJs.

Ed met his wife Marie Mauk at the University of Delaware where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He also served in the Delaware Air National Guard.

After graduating from UD, Ed taught mathematics at William Penn High School where he coached football, baseball, and girls’ basketball. His professional career in the Information Technology field, beginning with the DuPont Company and later with Computer Sciences Corporation, took him to various foreign locations. During the 1990’s, the family and he lived in Mexico City and London. Upon retiring from corporate life, Ed became Director of Technology at Ursuline Academy.

Early in their marriage, Ed and Marie were renovation pioneers in Trinity Vicinity, Wilmington where they made life-long friends. Shortly thereafter, the Stewarts and friends embarked on another adventure “moving up the hill to the gracious and spacious” houses in the historic Cool Springs neighborhood. The Stewart family ultimately settled in another city neighborhood (Rockford Park Manor) and their beach home in Lewes, DE.

Ed continued his life-long passion for sports by playing rugby (flanker #7) during the early days of the Wilmington Rugby Football Club. As maturity (and sensibility) set in, he made the switch to long-distance running and competed in marathons. After listening again to his body, his lifetime sport became cycling. He was a natural athlete who enjoyed coaching many of his children’s sports teams and being co-president with Marie of the Booster Club at the American School in London.

Ed’s memory will always be cherished by his devoted wife of 51 years, Marie Mauk Stewart and his three adoring children, Andrew E.H. Stewart, and his wife Lisa; T. Edward (Ted) Stewart and his fiancée Kristen Schindler; and Alanna Piser and her husband Thomas R. (TR) Piser. He is also survived by his three great joys, grandchildren Charlie Stewart, Catherine Piser and Caroline Piser.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 11:00 am at St. Ann Church; 2013 Gilpin Avenue; Wilmington, DE 19806. Interment will be private.

    I met Ed in the fall of 1961, when were were 7th graders, playing football with the Stanton Clippers. His dad Tom (Mr. Stewart to me) oversaw both the junior and senior teams. We continued as team mates in various sports until we were both seniors, playing baseball for Dickinson. After high school, we took different paths, and I didn't see him for what had to be over 40 years at a Delaware football pregame tailgate party. Ed was a kind, caring man with many varied interests. I was fortunate to have known him, and he will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.

    My wife Sandi and I send our "Prayers for the Peace that Passeth Understanding" on the untimely passing of this fine man Ed Stewart to Marie and the rest of their family. Marie was one of the first I came to know 45 years ago when I joined DuPont, and it was not much longer that I came to know Ed. Our interactions always were warm, personal, collegial, and I enjoyed seeing and knowing them. Having bumped into them over breakfast at what seemed just weeks ago at First Watch, it's such a shock to read here of Ed's passing. Ed was a fine man. He will be missed. May he Rest in Peace.

    Ed and I shared an office, 5th floor Mellon, overlooking The Square. He was a fun office mate / super. He and Marie were in the process of building their family. Marie, I'm glad you had many years together after retirement. While world travel and foreign living for work was awesome for you, being able to relax and enjoy each day was a big change. See you in the next life, Ed! Regards, PDB

    I'm so sorry to hear of Ed's passing. Ed was a co-worker at DuPont and someone who, to me, "lived large" enjoying life whatever the day brought. He had a quick humor and smile. In the work world, I've found that it isn't so much what you are doing as who you are doing it with. Ed was one of those people I enjoyed working with and missed when he moved on to another position. My condolences to the family.

    Brandon Curry Dougherty writes,
    Ed was a great man. We loved him at Ursuline Academy where I taught with him for 18 years. He had this calming effect, but it was always with a smile and appreciation of who you were as an individual. We talked about everything but mostly about the Phillies and I know when they won it all in 2008 both of us cheered for joy. He will be greatly missed and my extension of love goes out to Marie and the whole family. And I now teach with his wonderful, personable, and great daughter-in-law at Gateway Charter Lisa Stewart. She carries Ed's spirit to school each day. My love for all! And, as a sign of affection, we used to call Ed at Ursuline, "Uncle Ed" because at Ursuline EVERYONE was family :}

    I was saddened to learn of Ed’s passing today. My heartfelt condolences to his family. I was lucky to “grow-up” as a friend of Ed’s who lived down the street. Sixty plus years past, there was always a ballgame in the intersection of Diamond and Decalb. When a ‘left-handed bat’ was the ‘Doctor ordered’, Eddie was the prescription! RIP Old Friend
