Edward K. “Kenny” Budd, Jr.

Edward K. “Kenny” Budd, Jr., 59, of Wilmington, Delaware passed away surrounded by his family on August 25, 2022, following a long illness.

Kenny was born in 1962 to Edward Kenneth Budd and Elizabeth Lafferty Budd. He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1981 and attended the University of Delaware.

Kenny loved all music – from the Rolling Stones to U-2 to The Monkees and Sinatra. He played guitar and sang in several bands in his younger years. Kenny enjoyed traveling, history and trivia. He was an avid Philadelphia sports fan and especially was a diehard Philadelphia Eagles fan. He also loved to entertain and cook, and enjoyed creating Sunday dinners for his wide circle of friends. He was the life of the party, would enliven any group with his phenomenal sense of humor, made a new friend each day, and was loved by all who met him.

Kenny is survived by his sister Linda Budd Watson (Skip); niece Kendal Budd Hecker (Alex); nephew Todd D. (“Danny”) Colvard; step-niece Samantha Vandenbraak (Bobby); his life partner Linda O’Donnell and her family, daughter Kristine DePonte (Nate) and their children Ben, Zac and Nick; and son Michael O’Donnell, Jr. and his family; and devoted friend Kelly Devlin who helped take care of him to the very end. He will be deeply missed by all of us.

In keeping with the tradition of the way Kenny and Linda entertained their friends and family, a Celebration of Life to honor Kenny will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2022 between 2 to 6 p.m. at their home at 717 Ashford Road, in Sharpley. Please bring your pictures and stories to share and reminisce.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to the Alzheimer’s Association of the Delaware Valley, 399 Market Street, Suite 250, Philadelphia, PA 19106; or the Delaware SPCA, 455 Stanton-Christiana Road, Newark, DE 19713.

Kenny and I became best of friends our junior and senior years in High School. Playing music for ourselves, family, and friends was a common interest we shared that brought us much joy. Kenny had a love for the outdoors and taught me to appreciate God’s wonderful creation and to have much respect for it too. My only regret is that our friendship didn’t continue long after that, and that we rarely crossed paths after college. I too pray for everyone who loved him and called him friend. Hope to see many of you on Sunday.

From 1983 to sometime in 1986, Kenny Budd and I were best friends, bandmates, and co-songwriters for a Delaware band you probably never heard of called The Exam. We lost touch for a decade, reconnected in the '90s, and then lost touch again until last July when we reconnected on Facebook. We promised we would call each other but that never happened. I have a lot of close memories of Kenny from those years we were tight, and I'll never forget them or him.

By chance, saw Bart @ the Fair and he told me of your passing. Ellen forwarded me the article published by your band mate. I'm not surprised to hear the back stage experience to Live Aid, Ben went on to be backstage the rest of his life and toured the world a few times doing it. You were always with Ben when I was young. Either at our house or the other way around. More than often up to no good. I'm sorry to here of your passing but happy you lasted this long. It sounds like you lived a good life and you will be missed. My condolences to your loved ones and family.
