Edward Carpenter White

Edward Carpenter White of Wilmington, Delaware went peacefully to his Lord’s eternal home on June 4, 2023. He will be remembered for his generosity, competitive spirit, and tremendous love for his family and friends.

Edward (age 91) was born to Willard Thomas White and Grace Carpenter White. He grew up on Old Limestone Road and is a graduate of Tower Hill School in Wilmington where among his accomplishments, he was captain of the football team and a spelling bee winner for the State of Delaware. He went on to graduate from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut and to complete his CPCU designation at the University of Pennsylvania.

Edward was a lifelong Episcopalian, served his country as a Lieutenant in the United States Army in Stuttgart, Germany, and spent a distinguished career that spanned fifty-four years with J. A. Montgomery Insurance, retiring as Senior Vice President when the company was purchased by Commerce Bank. During his career he was elected President of the Independent Insurance Association of Delaware, and was a dedicated member of the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce where he served a term as Treasurer.

The greatest part of his life and his heart belonged to his family. Edward enjoyed thirty-four wonderful years with his wife and best friend, Patricia, who died in 2014. He was also preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Tom White, Philip White, Bruce White, Jerry White and Gail White Landon. He is survived by his six children Shannon Elizabeth Valentine (Michael), Suzette Schofield White (Steve Lindsey), Sandra Ellen O’Leary (Michael), Jennifer White Montoya, Edward Carpenter White, Jr., (Helene), and Mary White, and his eight grandchildren, Lindsay, Catherine, Jack, Ryan, Brooke, Carper, Blake, and Alex.

Edward was always known as a true gentleman who loved reading, crossword puzzles, cards, poker dice, University of Delaware football, weekends in Lewes Beach, and learning more about everyone with whom he crossed paths. He will be greatly missed.
