Dr. Peter Ivan Rabinovitch

Longtime area family physician, Dr. Peter Ivan Rabinovitch passed away peacefully June 23 in Wilmington, DE; he was 83.

Peter was born in Norwich, CT., to Dr. Esther Cramer and Dr. Alec Rabinovitch. He attended Norwich schools, graduating from Norwich Free Academy, and going on to the University of Vermont where he received his medical degree in 1963. He completed his medical internship at Rochester Hospital in 1964.

Dr. Rabinovitch joined the US Public Health Service in 1964 before opening his private practice. He served on the Navajo reservation in Chinle, Arizona as well as on US Coast Guard Cutters in Cape May, New Jersey and in Wilmington, NC. He served again in 1983-1984, stationed at the Miami Indian Health Center in Miami, Oklahoma and then on the Standing Rock Indian reservation in Ft. Yates, North Dakota.

In private practice, he was the consummate family physician, responding to his patients after hours and weekends as needed. Patients would frequently come to an office in his home, or he would make house calls, carrying his black medical bag and occasionally stitching up small cuts at a kitchen table. Dr Rabinovitch was recognized by his colleagues as being an excellent diagnostician. He served multiple generations of Waterford/New London area families for more than 45 years.

Peter was an avid hobbyist over his lifetime, his interests including candle making, photography, wood carving, fly tying, model planes and gardening. He was an aviation and car enthusiast, especially fond of little sports cars like his MG. His home and office were filled with knick-knacks, curios and souvenirs brought to him by his patients over the years.

Peter is survived by his brother William Rabinovitch of New York City, his sons, Marc Ham, Adam and Paul Rabinovitch, all of Delaware; his daughters, Lynn Ham and Robyn Rabinovitch, of Delaware and Pennsylvania; his stepdaughter, Tara Hoelck Booker of New London, 10 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. He is pre-deceased by his son Alec Peterson and his wife Emily Rabinovitch.

Arrangements are private and the family encourages those who wish to honor and celebrate Peter’s life, to choose their own meaningful way to do so that is special to them and embodies the spirit of their relationship with him.

Sadness, at times does not fit the feeling of loss. I missed Peter when I moved to Florida 21 years ago. Missed him as my doctor, missed him as a friend. He was both, and many a time I spoke of him to family and friends. His abundant care of me as his patient and his sincerity to me as a friend. He will be missed by his family, friends and me !

    Marc Kashar writes,
Dr. Rabinovitch, Peter, was my wife's Doctor for many years and she could always count on him to "diagnose" her problem with little effort. I changed over to him after one visit. His easy going manner put you at rest and you felt that you could tell him anything and that is why he was able to get to the root of your problems. Kathy and I are sorry beyond words for the family's loss. May Peter's memory be a blessing to all to all those that he knew. May he rest in peace. Marc and Kathy Kashar.

    Bill Rabinovitch writes,
My brother Pete was a caring and generous person, & recall on my first becoming an artist, leaving my space career - & in 1964 driving across America in an old VW bus heading to San Francisco - & stopping along the way to visit Pete who was then head doctor at the Navaho Indian Reservation at the stunning Canyon de Chelly National Monument in Arizona. Pete then had me stay with him several weeks & I was allowed because of Pete to alone climb high up to the rim of Canyon de Chelly painting scenes with acrylics on canvas often incorporating native earths & stones, some of which survive. It was an extraordinary experience beyond anything I'd ever had changing my entire life forever as artist in ways unimaginabe - all because of Peter.

I’m sorry for your loss. Peter was our family physician for over 25 years. He was a doctor from the ‘50’s in attitude and spirit ALWAYS willing to see you at a moments notice regardless of what time of day it was or what holiday it happened to be. He was an excellent diagnostician and if he couldn’t help you he would hook you up immediately with someone who could. I also operated a preschool and one time we had a Circus theme. He let me come and clean out his office of all his clown knickknacks. His bed dude manner wasn’t always warm and cuddly but his service and dedication were top of the line. When he closed his office I still relied on his expertise. They don’t make doctors like Peter anymore. He will be greatly missed. Nancy Rupert

Paul - I'm so sorry to hear that your father has passed, but grateful that the family could be there to surround him with love, care and warmth in his final days. He'll never be far from your thoughts - the quote I like is "Always loving, always loved. Forever in our hearts." Just remember, if you need someone to talk to, your friends are there for you.

In the 1970's Dr Rabinovitch was my Physician . I think what i liked best about him was his direct approach to any problems . With me it was almost always getting bitten by ticks and the treatment he prescribed to treat Lyme disease . It seems a small thing but in retrospect i never had any lasting effects from getting bite. His approach was . We can't wait for the State Health Department to respond to the blood work , it may take a three or four weeks so what do yah say Jim ? I chose the anitbiotics . Many of my friends chose to wait for the State Health Department . I am sorry for your loss James L Miller #215 Connecticut State Trooper (retired)

So sorry for your loss. Peter was our family Doctor for almost 35 years. The most concerning person I have ever known. He went beyond the norm, always available to his patients. Not only did he have a lot of knowledge being a Doctor but a whole lot of common sense. We were with him up-to the day he retired. RIP Peter, we love you!

    Linda Swirski writes,
Please accept my sincere condolences for your family's loss. Dr. Rabinovitch was my family's doctor for almost 20 years and I could not have managed my physical and mental health, and raising my 2 boys without him. I only lived a few miles from his office and no matter what time of day or day of the week, he was always there for us. I admired him for his integrity and dedication to his patients, rather than to medical institutions which would have dictated the manner in which he ran his practice. Whenever we drove by his office, we always thought of him in the best way possible. Goodbye Dr. Rab. May you rest in peace. I will be making a donation to St. Joseph's Indian School in loving memory.

Robyn, my condolences on the loss of your father, I met him in 2002 at his house in New London. He was friendly and helped me with some of the family genealogy (including putting me in touch with you). Best wishes during this sad time.
