Dorothy Pappas

Dorothy Pappas passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 19, 2023 at the age of 93. Dorothy was born in New York City to native Greek parents Georgia and James Demetrakopoulas (Demont) on February 6, 1930 and lived in Wilmington, DE for over sixty-five years.  She graduated from New Haven State Teacher’s College and henceforth joined the United States Navy, serving as an ensign stationed in New York City.

Dorothy married her high school crush Nicholas Pappas.  Together as partners they navigated through life for over sixty years.  They travelled the world, bringing along children and grandchildren whenever possible.  They thrived on creating magical holiday celebrations for their children and grandchildren, as well as hosting extended family reunions at their beach house in Avalon, NJ and Aruba.

Dorothy was an avid reader, with piles of books to recommend and lend.  She was an excellent and curious cook who always seemed to be trying new recipes on guests.  As a lifetime member of the Greek Orthodox Church, Dorothy loved her church life and served in various church organizations over her many years, starting as a young adult in the choir, the Daughters of Penelope and Philoptochos.

Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband Nicholas, and is survived by her children Thalia, Christopher (Susan), Gregory, and Nikki (James), nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 2nd from 11:00 am to 12 pm followed by a funeral service at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church; 808 North Broom Street in Wilmington, DE. The burial service will take place immediately following at Silverbrook Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dorothy’s memory to Smile Train https://www.smiletrain.org/

Although I haven’t seen your mother in years I have fond memories of her(and of course your father). Especially growing up In Wilmington both through the church and as friends of my parents She was always gracious and nice to us kids. I never knew she served in the Navy, obviously having great humility as so many did from their generation. May her memory be eternal. Much love, Emanuel & Laura Lazopoulos

We will always remember Nick and Dorothy fondly. They gave much to our Holy Trinity parish here in Wilmington, and were among the first to greet us when we arrived. Memory eternal. May life be yours.

My deepest condolences for your family’s loss. Although I didn’t know most of you I grew up in holy trinity and knew Greg. Played basketball with him and remember your mother. She is with the Lord now and in an immortal body, and that gives us peace! God bless you all and cherish all the memories till you are together again. Ted and linda Ganakis

We will remember Aunt Dot with many warm memories over the years. I always looked up to her from a child, as she was a woman ahead of her time. Our moms shared many cups of coffee on Honeywell in the early years. As Koumbari they set the stage for the next 2 generations of friendships. Perhaps our parents have reunited again to play cards in Aruba. May their memories be eternal. 🙏🏼♥️
