Diane Richardson

Diane Richardson, age 82, of Wilmington, DE died on Saturday, March 30, 2024 of Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a cancer of the blood.  Born in Whitinsville Hospital, Whitinsville, MA, she was the daughter of Richard Meredith Andrews, Jr and Gertrude Frances Schofield, of Uxbridge, MA. Accomplished and skilled in craftwork, Dee had several award-winning quilts displayed at quilting events around the State of Delaware sponsored by the Lady Bug, her quilting bee.  She and her dear friend, Elva Levine, started the Yarn Bar, where they sold beautiful yarns, taught machine knitting as well as needle knitting, and created a community of talented and dedicated crafters.

Dee graduated from Oakwood Friends School in Poughkeepsie, NY, graduated from Drexel Institute and took a major in French at the University of Delaware.  She was Project Director for ACTION! PHOTO, a commercial and aerial photography studio, known for its 1970’s series of aerial color photos documenting the State of Delaware. She was marketing representative for Alloy Surfaces and SouthCo Fasteners both in Chester County.  Finally finding her dream job, she worked for 12 years as a guide at Winterthur Museum.  Dee was also Treasurer of “Fresh Start,” a non-profit organization of women helping other women return to school for a fresh start.

A life-long member of MENSA International, the largest and oldest high IQ society in the world, she was also a life-long dog lover. To know Dee was to know her dogs: a “special needs” Italian Greyhound, an Afghan Hound no one else would adopt, an unruly Dalmatian, several shelter dogs, and two beautiful standard French Poodles.  Her first husband Lloyd Teitsworth, was the creator behind ACTION! PHOTO until his passing in 1985. She and Paul Richardson, organist for the Philadelphia Phillies, were married from 1993 until his passing in 2006.  She is survived by her sister, Kelley Andrews, two half-brothers and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to Faithful Friends in Wilmington, DE or another no-kill animal shelter.

    Ronald Baldwin writes,
Dee, I miss your smile. You always greeted me with a glowing welcome, You shared my sadness with the death of my wife four years ago. I was shocked to read the date of your birth. I always thought you were older than me because you always demonstrated a mature wisdom and joy of living that I could only aspire to. The world is a better place because you were here among us. Timothy Laushey writes,
As her husband, Paul Richardson’s, drummer for many many many years, I knew Dee in a different light than most. She and Paul treated me as not many others did. They helped me in more ways than I can mention. She made everyone she came in contact with better, Paul and I included. As Sinatra always said “sleep warm”.
