Dean Given

Dean Given, originally from Syracuse, New York, passed away at 80 on August 17th, 2023.  He was born in 1943 to Kenneth and Elizabeth Given. A devout Catholic, his unwavering faith was evident in every aspect of his life. His work ethic, discipline, commitment, and playful humor made a profound and enduring impact on all who knew him.

Dean’s joys included coaching his children’s teams, ocean swims, dog walks, supporting Syracuse hoops, and cheering on the Yankees. He graduated from Most Holy Rosary, pursued seminary studies, earned an undergraduate degree from Le Moyne College and a master’s degree from the University of Baltimore. His career path led him to become a Maryland state trooper. Dean subsequently became a special agent with the National Security Agency.

His impact extended beyond law enforcement to a respected landscaping business. This endeavor not only imparted valuable landscaping skills to local youths but also cultivated crucial management abilities and a strong sense of responsibility, all while enabling them to earn income.

Following his retirement from the government, Dean enjoyed playing golf and other outdoor activities in Melbourne Beach, Florida.

Dean is survived by his wife Nancy, son Barry and daughter Betsy, stepdaughters Bonnie Metcalfe, Christie Murphy, Brooke Crowson, grandsons Rip, Luke, and AJ Economou. Dean was predeceased by his father Kenneth, mother Elizabeth, and brother Mark.

Family and Friends of Dean Given: Happily recall Dean from when we were both enrolled and classmates at LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY. from 1967-68. Always good natured with a keen sense of humor. May your period of bereavement and grief be, mercifully, short. God bless you all.
