Charles Borromeo Fitzpatrick (Fitz) “The Man, The Myth, The Legend” passed away suddenly on Friday July 31, 2020 at the age of 71 of natural causes. Charles was born in Philadelphia to the late John T. Sr. and Mary Fitzpatrick. Charles grew up in Wilmington attending St. Thomas Catholic School and was a Graduate of Wilmington High School Class of 1968. He attended Delaware Technical and Community College from 1968 to 1970, worked for New Castle County starting 1968 while attending Del Tech.
Charles then attended Eastern Kentucky University and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology, graduating in May 1974. Charles lived in Lexington, KY from 1974 to 1976 working as a draftsman until his position with the New Castle County Prothonotary’s office in 1976.
He ran as a Democrat for the Prothonotary’s office in 1986. He was appointed to Chief County Complaints Officer, finishing up as Executive Assistant to the County Executive Dennis Greenhouse for two terms before Charles retired in 1998.
Charles then worked a various other jobs to pass the time. Charles was a long time resident of 1401 Condominiums, where he was known as “The Mayor.” Charles is predeceased by his parents John T. Sr. and Mary Fitzpatrick, his sister Mary Ellen Behornar and her husband Michael Behornar of Wilmington, and Charles longtime companion Lecenne Dorris (Big Red). Charles is survived by his brother John T. Fitzpatrick Jr. and his wife Dr. RuthAnn Fitzpatrick of Wilmington, DE, his son Bryan Fitzpatrick and his wife Cara and their three children all of Drexel Hill, ex-wife Kelly L. Kohler of Lexington, KY as well as some nieces and a nephew.
Charles was a Great Man, Brother, Husband, Father, Pop Pop and Friend. He will be missed by all that knew him and loved him, which is really all in the same. A Gathering will be held at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike (on 202 in North Wilmington), Wilmington, Delaware on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 from 3-5 p.m.
