Charles “Charlie” Anderson Pleasance, 89, of Greenville, Delaware, died on March 18, 2018.
Charlie was born in Cleveland, Ohio to the late George and Grace (Anderson) Pleasance. He graduated from Lakewood High School and went on to receive both a B.A. and M.A. in Philosophy at Brown University. He then returned to Cleveland where he met and married his wife, Margaret Ann “Peg” (Barclay) Pleasance. They married on October 24, 1953. Together, they had three daughters and lived in Ohio, Virginia, Illinois, Tennessee, Florida and Delaware.
Although his formal study was in Philosophy, Charlie’s vocation and favorite activity was electrical engineering, specifically in the area of telephone-switching systems. During his long career in the telephone industry, he designed products widely used by both Independent and Bell (ATT) telephone companies. He had a keen interest in the history of the independent telephone industry and self-published a book on the subject in 1989, The Spirit of Independent Telephony and was a member of the Independent Telephone Pioneer Association.
While living in Naples, Florida, he was an active member of the Naples Players Theatre Guild and the Alliance Française de Naples.
Charlie is survived by his children Barbara (Enrique) Zelaya, Penny (Robert E. Ewers, Jr.) Pleasance, Mary Jane (Peter) Smith; grandchildren Henry, Lauren, Kevin, Glenn, and Cameron; great grandson Noah; and sister Helen Kirkpatrick.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of Stonegates Health Center and Home Instead Senior Care for providing comfort to Charlie in his final days.
