Cathleen G. Welsh

This is the story of a life fully lived. Right up to the date of her death, December 21, 2022, Cathleen G. Welsh, age 86, of Greenville, DE kept herself very happily busy. Born in October of 1936, in Cincinnati, OH, Cathy married Robert L. Welsh, her husband of 64 years, at the age of 21. They had four children. She was a beauty queen in college, a lovely bride and mother, an English teacher first at Sanford School and then in the public school system in New Castle County. She had a teaching degree from the University of Cincinnati and a masters’ degree from Vanderbilt University. She was an author of seven textbooks for Simon & Shuster. She was an avid participant in both the book club and women’s golf team at Wilmington Country Club, a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, and a devout member of Christ Church Christiana Hundred where she was involved in the Green Show as well as being an usher and Eucharistic Minister and the leader of the Foyer dinner group. She especially liked reading lessons or prayers to the congregation.

During their marriage, Cathy and Bob lived in five cities in different parts of the country. They also spent four years living in base housing at Biggs Air Force Base in Texas. They spent the last 48 years living in their current home in Greenville, DE. Together, Cathy and Bob taught Sunday School to 7th or 8th graders every place that they lived. When Bob was in grad school, Cathy not only helped with his projects but also was president of the wife’s group at his school. They greatly enjoyed travelling in their retirement, and explored several countries in North America, Europe, and Asia and several islands in the Pacific Ocean. Their marriage was an adventure.

In addition to Bob, Cathy is survived by her son, Michael L. Welsh of Wilmington, DE, daughters Amy Costello (Richard) of Wilmington, DE, Elizabeth Moran (Erik) of Monkton, MD, and Carolyn Welsh of Wilmington, DE. She was the loving grandmother of Peter and Julie Costello, and Jonathan, Connor, and Thomas Moran. She was the loving great grandmother of Paul Costello. Cathy was predeceased by her parents Ralph and Marie Goebel, and sister, Virginia Ann Goebel, all of South Fort Mitchell, KY.

Condolences

    Karen Schilling Walsh writes,
Kathleen and I were members of the Reading Council of Northern Delaware. We worked on several projects together. She was always enthusiastic and a pleasure to work with. She was very generous in opening her beautiful home for meetings. I am sorry for your loss.

Leslie Porter lit a candle and writes,
A beautiful, fitting tribute to a woman whose love of family, friends, and companions in this thing called life reflected the love God freely gives to all of us. Cathy's warm smile spoke deeply on any given day. Cathy's positive loving support was a gift to all who came into contact with her. Perhaps it is even fitting to recognize God's deep love for Cathy letting Cathy live life to the fullest to the bitter end when she was quickly called home to Heaven. Sending much love and support to the Welsh family as we celebrate Cathy's life and the goodness she brought to our broken world.
