Carolyn Teachey Watjen

Carolyn Teachey Watjen of Greenville, DE died on August 28, 2021 at the age of 86, after a short illness.

Carolyn was an industrious person, completing her Undergrad at the University of North Carolina in 3 years, which allowed her to get her Masters at the University of Pennsylvania in 9 months. She majored in history and international relations. It was there she met two special people, Alice Watjen (Stottler) and Lennie Helen Leaver.

She then went to New York and worked for the Associated Press. While at UPenn she met a dashing young man, John Watjen, and after marrying in 1958, they moved to Virginia to allow John to complete his PhD. When their 2 children were on their own, Carolyn picked up her career again, becoming an award winning author under the pen name of Charles Todd. A Test of Wills, published in 1995, was the first of 38 completed novels. There are two still waiting for publication.

Carolyn was interested in life. She loved to travel, having explored 107 countries until COVID interrupted her yearly ritual. She spent hours in her garden, excited every year as the spring brought new blooms. She learned to paint, to play the piano, photograph and so many other things great and small. She was a member of AAUW, The DuPont Country Club and the Rolls Royce Owner’s Club.

Carolyn is pre-deceased by her parents, Martha Pearle and James Clifton Teachey, Jr.  In 2014, her dashing man of 56 years, John Watjen passed. She is survived by her daughter, Linda of Hockessin, DE, her son David of North Palm Beach, FL (Dianna) and her sister Martha Teachey of Wilmington, DE.  We must never forget her love for her cats, many who are still with us and those who were at the Rainbow Bridge waiting for her.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank several people, whose help over the recent days and months, allowed Carolyn to have a fighting chance of complete recovery. They are Scott Schaeffer, MD, his office manager Ann, Rhoda Smith and the many Doctors and Nurses in the E Tower ICU at Christiana Care. In addition, this list would be incomplete without acknowledging the love and support of Marti Williams (vet) and Betsy Price.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations go to the Delaware Humane Society, Wilmington, DE or the Needy Family Fund of Delaware.

Wendy Alden of Vancouver, Canada lit a candle and writes,
My sincere condolences from my home in Vancouver, Canada. I was so fortunate in meeting both Caroline & David in Vancouver when they attended the fabulous Left Coast Mystery Writers Conference in March, 2019 where I was a non-author attendee. It was a great pleasure to speak to Caroline about her creation of Bess Crawford as a British WW II nurse as I had worked as an RN in both Vancouver and London, England - where I was born. This series gave me a glimpse into the world of nursing during the Second World War years and I treasure the conversation Caroline and I shared in the evening. We kept in communication by email after that and I was very saddened to hear she had passed in late August. I did send my condolences to David & Dianne in Florida by mail but here would like to extend them to David's sister, Linda also. Caroline was a most gracious woman and with such a zest for life. May she rest in Peace.

Today I received a copy of your book South Carolina--A Day At A Time. I was so delighted I wanted to find you online to tell you how much I appreciate your work. We have family roots in Colonial South Carolina and your book took me places I've read about and researched, but never seen. You and your co-author created a wonderful, informative read. I feel like I traveled those back roads with you. I'm sorry I was too late to thank you personally.
