Carmela J. Ianni

Carmela J. Marsilii Ianni, age 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, December 1st, 2024 in Wilmington, DE.

Born in August 1933 in Wilmington, DE, Carmela was a graduate of the Ursuline Academy and went on to become a licensed cosmetologist and hairstylist at MAJO Hair Studio for over twenty years, often teaching hairstyling classes to her peers. Carmela created the infamous “Carmel Roll” hairdo and continued to maintain her Cosmetology License while actively cutting the hair of friends/family. Carmela was also a semi-professional photographer and used her skills to capture the special moments during family parties while urging everyone to “never forget the feet!” Even if she did not know you personally, she would make a point to take your photo with friends/family while chatting with you along the way.

Carmela is survived by her two sisters, Elvina Marsilii Wilson (James), Regina Marsilii Abbott (Eugene), and her brother William J. Marsilii Jr. (Doris); her four children, Aldo Gibellino (Diane), Madelyn Gibellino Maglin (Barry), Linda Gibellino Wilson (William) & Carmella Gibellino Davies (Bryan); her 7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Carmela was predeceased by her parents, William J. Sr. & Madeline Crisconi Marsilii, her two sisters, Angela Marsilii Piane & Beatrice Marsilii Setting, and her two late husbands, Ronald J. Gibellino and James J. Carroll.

Carmela was married to Major General Frances A. Ianni, the Former Adjutant General for the State of Delaware, as well as a Vietnam Combat Veteran and West Point graduate for 30 lovely years. She just adored her “Frankie.” Carmela was the loving stepmother and known as “Carmela-Moo” to her husband Frank’s children Steven E. Ianni, Christina L. Ianni, Marisa A. Tanner, Jeanne M. Ianni and Marjorie I. Malone; his 6 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.

Carmela was loving, poised, savvy, unique, charming, gracious, thoughtful, and known for her remarkable words of wisdom. Often sharing her joy and positivity with her beautiful smile and little laugh, Carmela left her mark on everyone she came into contact with. It has always been said “Everybody loves Carmela!” Carmela was exceptionally dedicated as the Vice President of the “Young at Hearts” program at St. Helena’s, and a very active volunteer for many years at the monthly second Sunday breakfast also held at St. Helena’s.

Carmela was considered the matriarch of her big, Italian family and a class act. Despite her modest clothing, to include a pretty apron and stockings while in the kitchen, she would often surprise people with her witty remarks and edginess. Carmela’s children will be the first to tell you, she wasn’t afraid to throw a shoe from time to time when they would misbehave as children! Always dressed to the nines with her beautiful pins and scarves, she will be a hard act to follow.

Known for her “Sunday Dinners,” Carmela was a fabulous cook and baker. The relatives would look forward to her delicious homemade Italian Wedding Soup and Pizzelles around the holidays. She traveled to Italy, loved ballroom dancing with her other half at the Crystal Ballroom, and enjoyed spending time with her large, extended family on countless occasions. There was no reason needed to throw a family party!

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 PM on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at St. Helena’s Catholic Church, 602 Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, DE 19809, where family and friends may visit beginning at 10:30 AM. Interment in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery will be held privately.

There will never be another Carmella . Even God would be challenged to repeat perfection. Her beauty was not only rare, it was luminous, inside and out. Heavenly given kindness and spiritually inspiring. We will miss her and the way she made the General glow when he looked at her. Our heartfelt sympathy to her family. She truly was an earth angel.

Carmela didn't just live a life of 91 years she thrived and created new beautiful ones reflected in her family. Always giving selflessly to others with ease and with a true loving concern. Never a frown or complaint. She lived for every second of life God afforded her and without doubt or hesitation. Carmela was True North and centermass for all of us. She outlived two husbands, kicked cancer head on and would then say "Bring it. You don't know what girl you're messing with!" Carmela-Moo was "The Wilmington Bomb", a walking beauty, a porcelain doll with a touch of " bling". Carmela was a friend you could place in your hand or pocket and take her everywhere for any adventure anytime, night or day with the added fun factor. Also, she truly loved my father and made it known to him he may be an Army Airborne Infantry Pathfinder Ranger Major General but she was the Commanding General and that's why he loved her so. THANK YOU Carmela-Moo for loving my father with all your heart until it broke. You are the best! Love you forever and always. Missing you already however, I know you will always continue to be a huge presence in my heart, Marisa

She was so funny, smart, beautiful, feisty, classy, and always reminded me to “be brave”. She was a force. I am so sorry for your loss. Sending all of my love and prayers.

Carmella was a natural nurturer. Her home was home to everyone. She was one of the kindest and sweetest people to ever walk this earth. She had a timelessness and agelessness about her and she possessed the ability to drop everything for someone seeking counsel or someone in need. I’ve known her almost my entire life and I had the pleasure to work with her for many years. Beautiful and charming and always ready for a party or to entertain friends and family. She fed me countless times, but also fed me spiritually with her abundant giving nature. She was an angel who walked among us ❤️

“Grandmom” was like a Grandmom to me even though she wasn’t my direct family . She was the nicest woman with a great sense of humor. She always had a fabulous wardrobe at family functions. She dressed with class and taught us (girls) to always wear pantyhose with a dress for proper etiquette. She always had a smile on her face unless she had her camera out to take pictures of EVERYONE. I’ll never forget her words of wisdom and how sweet she was to me and my son Dominic. My condolences go out to the family and friends during this tough time.

    Jeanne Ianni writes,
Once upon a love story… Almost 30 years ago, my father asked me to get dressed up and drive to meet him for lunch in Fort Meade. This was an odd request so l called to inquire why. He said he wanted me to meet a special friend of his. I said I hope you are not trying to set me up on a blind date. He laughed and said he wanted me to meet his special lady friend. I was caught off guard and realized my dad may have started dating and could be introducing me to a girlfriend. Unbeknownst to me, I was meeting my future stepmother. My dad was given a second chance at love and was taking the leap. He was so smitten with Carmela that he even started ballroom dance lessons with her. Those came in handy shortly after as they showed off their new talent during their first dance together at their wedding reception. My Dad was 65 and Carmela was 64, proving it’s never too late to find love. Their wedding was the best I’ve ever attended. The look of true love as he watched his beautiful bride walk towards him down the aisle, Carmela’s big smile as she stared directly at him as if they were the only 2 people in the church. You could feel their love for each other. I witnessed a different side of my father that day. He is a retired 2 star General and the former Adjutant General of Delaware. I grew up always seeing my dad in uniform, marching in parades, at ceremonial events, giving speeches, always standing stoically and tall, his presence known, and talking loud… always very loud! That day, I saw him as a man, tenderly holding his bride’s hand and asking her to be his wife and together, they would love, honor, trust and always respect one another. Carmela brought out the soft side of my dad. We were all witnesses to such a magical celebration of true love and tenderness. For almost 3 decades, they remained faithfully by each other’s side and committed to their vows. Not everyday was perfect but throughout the years, they continued to show affection and admiration for one another along with a lot of patience, communication, compassion and forgiveness. I once asked Carmela what her secret was to a successful marriage and she told me it was being attentive to one another and having separate bathrooms! Carmela surrounded my father with so much love, laughter, affection, attention, soft kisses, hand holding, great haircuts, laughter and adoration. Our family is forever grateful for making Dad’s life full and complete. Carmela was his world. Recently, my father has been in the hospital. It has caused confusion to my stepmother who has short term memory loss. She doesn’t understand where her Frankie is and why he is not with her at home. She missed him beyond measure. She developed takotsubo cardiomyopathy, otherwise known as Broken heart syndrome. My father was able to be transported from the hospital where he was, to the hospital where Carmela was. As she received her last rites, my father continued to hold her hand and express his unwavering love for her. Our sweet, precious, loving stepmother passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, December 1, surrounded by her loving family and her adoring husband. We pray for our step family as they mourn the loss of Carmela who was the center of their universe. May all of you find comfort in the memories of an amazing woman. Dad, we pray for you too as we know your heart has been shattered without your”Carm” by your side. How blessed were you to take a leap of faith and live a beautiful love story. We love you Dad and hope you find strength and recovery so you are able to return home soon. “May the Lord bless you and keep you; may the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious unto you; may the Lord lift up his contenance upon you, and give you peace.” Oceans of love to you Dad. 💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟

I have known Carmela all my life. She was my sister-in-law, but she truly was the sister I never had. When I was young, she cared for me many times, often giving me her advice, especially as a teen (solicited or not). Living close to her, I spent many hours with her, watching as she firmly, but gently raised her children. She was the most beautiful & loving person, inside and out, that I have ever known. Always having a kind and positive view of everything. Always giving that funny face when I disagreed with her. Being from two different generations, we disagreed frequently, especially in those teen years. I will always keep her in my heart ❤️. Love you Carmela. My deepest condolences go out to Frank, Aldo, Madelyn, Lynda, Carmella, Carmela’s sisters & brother and all their extended families. We were all so fortunate to have her in our life.
