Barbara A. Hoover

Barbara A. Hoover passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, December 2, 2023. She was 92.

Barbara Jean Alabaster was born in 1931, to Francis and Ellen Alabaster. She grew up in Highland Park, New Jersey, and the family later moved to Wilmington, Delaware. Barbara received an AB from the college of William and Mary in 1953, and a Master of Education in 1976 from the University of Delaware.

At William and Mary, Barbara met and married David Rittenhouse, and they moved back to Wilmington. She and David had three children: Lynn, David, and Kay. The couple eventually divorced. Barbara married Conrad (Connie) Hoover in 1975, and her family grew with the addition of Connie’s children: Kathe, Christine, and Andrew.

Barbara began her teaching career at Tower Hill School in 1973. She pursued her master’s degree in education while teaching full-time. She taught third and fourth grades and later became the 7th and 8th grade Reading Coordinator. Barbara loved teaching, and in 1990 she received the Kitchel Chair award at Tower Hill demonstrating excellence in educational leadership and a love for students. She retired from teaching in 1994.

Barbara was also active serving the community. In her younger years she served on the Junior Board of the Delaware Hospital and in the Junior League of Delaware. Barbara was also very active in the P.E.O. sisterhood, which was near and dear to her heart. She worked to further the cause of helping women obtain funding for education. She served as president of Chapter D, President of the Delaware State Chapter, and spent six years as a trustee of the P.E.O. International Foundation.

Barbara was also an active member at Westminster Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and Stephen Minister for many years. She had a beautiful voice and sang for many years in the Westminster Presbyterian Church Choir. She also sang leading roles with the Savoy Company in Philadelphia.

While Barbara accomplished so much professionally, and in the community, her biggest impact was on her family and the people she touched. She was a talented seamstress and prolific quilter. She spent countless hours making beautiful quilts for all her “dear ones”. She had a huge heart, a beautiful, shining soul, and boundless love for her family and friends.

Barbara was pre-deceased by her husband, Connie Hoover, and step-son, Andrew Hoover. She is survived by her children: Lynn (John) Green, David (Mary) Rittenhouse, Kay (Tim) McDonald, and stepdaughters: Kathe (Scott) Hill and Christine (Hank) Harding. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Pat Phares, her nephew, Marc Phares, her niece, Holly Phares, and her sister-in-law and friend, Pat Rittenhouse.  She had nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren.

Condolences

    Madalyn Schultz Petit writes,
I had the great privilege of working with Barbara at Tower Hill School. True and gracious, she epitomized what it means to be a lady. I am forever grateful to her for calming my concerns when my daughter was late with her reading comprehension. Barbara was right! (It was just a matter of brain maturity.) My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

    Ann Ashmore writes,
Dear Lynn and family. Please know you are in my prayers and on my heart as you grieve your loss. I met Barbara when I joined her P.E.O. chapter and over the years, her friendship, and mentoring have meant the world to me. She had such a gentle, loving and special way of showing others her genuine concern and care for them. Barbara was forever, a dog lover! Her sweet Teddy was such a joy for her and after his passing, she would carry treats in her pocket during her morning walks for all the dogs she met along the way. During our chapter fundraisers, when Barbara's always beautiful handiwork projects would come up for auction, there was a traditional competitive clamor for the honor to go home with one of her cherished offerings. Barbara's sweet and peaceful spirit will always be with me in my precious memories of her and I am blessed to have known her. With much love and sympathy, Ann Ashmore

David P. Kozinski lit a candle and writes,
I went to Tower Hill School with Lynn, Kay and my dear friend and classmate David, and spent a fair amount of time at their home. Barbara was invariably warm and welcoming to me. Reading her obituary reminded me of accomplishments of hers that I knew about but also brought others to my attention that I did not - and what a list it is! Barbara was not one to trumpet such things, and, although David is very proud of his amazing mother, he shares her sense of modesty and proportion. My wife Patti and I are very glad we had a chance to spend a little time with Barbara during her Grandson Charlie's recent wedding celebration. Her grace and fortitude are qualities we will always remember. We extend our sincere condolences to Barbara's family and hope their wonderful memories of her will, over time, supplant the sadness of her loss.

    Alexis Andrianopoulos writes,
Mrs. Hoover was my fourth grade teacher at Tower Hill. Prior to that year, I knew her as Mrs. Rittenhouse, so I was devastated when I received my class assignment in the mail in August. Who was Mrs. Hoover, and why didn't I get Mrs. Rittenhouse? When I learned on the first day of school that they were one and the same, I was overjoyed. She was not only a wonderful teacher, but also a caring, warm, generous person. I am so lucky to have been in her class and in her presence. My sincere condolences to everyone who loved her May her memory be eternal.

I am so sorry to hear of Barbara’s passing. Barbara and Connie were my neighbors for over ten years and dearly missed when they moved to Maris Grove. Barbara was a great help to me at several crisis points in my life helping with my pets. She was so kind and giving of her time. My deepest sympathy to her family. Take comfort that she and Connie are together now
