Ashoke Chatterjee

Ashoke Chatterjee, 79, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully in his home on September 24, 2024. Born in Lahore, India, to the late Chhaya (Banerjee) and Nitya Gopal Chatterjee, Ashoke grew up in New Delhi, India and graduated from Bengal Engineering College at the University of Calcutta before emigrating to the United States to pursue a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. After completing his education, he remained in Chattanooga and joined the DuPont Company as an engineer. In 1971, Ashoke married his wife, Lakshmisri C. Chatterjee, and they settled in Chattanooga where they started a family. In 1980, Ashoke accepted a new assignment with DuPont in their Newark, DE, location. As his work with DuPont progressed, it brought wonderful opportunities for expat assignments in Shanghai, China, and in Bombay and Hyderabad, India. Ashoke enjoyed having the opportunity to work with professionals overseas and collaborate on international ventures. His many international work assignments also allowed him to bring his family on trips abroad, and he never missed an opportunity to explore different parts of Europe, Asia, Southeast Asia, and South America during his professional travels.

After working over 40 years with DuPont, Ashoke and Lakshmisri decided to retire in the familiar, culture-rich community of Wilmington, DE. Their dream retirement was shortened by Lakshmisri’s battle with pancreatic cancer in 2016, but Ashoke took careful and attentive care of her throughout her illness. Following Lakshmisri’s death, Ashoke continued to cultivate his passion for practical and informative community service by sponsoring the dedication of the Lakshmisri C. Chatterjee Memorial Classroom at the Hindu Temple Association of Wilmington. He also created free educational seminars to help retirees navigate Social Security and Medicare, and to help young professionals learn about financial planning. These endeavors spawned a namesake scholarship fund for enterprising college students in the greater Wilmington area. Ashoke enjoyed traveling with his family both domestically and internationally, being of assistance to his community and helping others, being in the company of his large family, spending quality time with his granddaughter, listening to classical music, playing the harmonica and card games, watching soccer and cricket, being “Grand-paw” for his grand-pets, and reminding people of the importance of voting.

Ashoke is survived by his daughters Tiara Chatterjee and Pia D. Chatterjee (Robert Kuhn); granddaughter Maya A. Kuhn; sister Nandita Banerjee; brothers-in-law Amitabha Chakraborty (Monica), Debabrata Chakraborty (Roma Debabrata), Subhas Chakraborty, Shibaji Chakraborty; and his sisters-in-law, Shanti Chakraborty and Sunita Chakraborty. He is also survived by 5 nieces, 5 nephews, 5 grandnieces, and 5 grandnephews. He is predeceased by his wife, Lakshmisri C. Chatterjee; and brothers-in-law Partha Chakraborty, Jawaharlal Chakraborty, and Ranjan Banerjee.

Memorial Services will be held at 2pm EST on Saturday, October 5th at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE. The family kindly asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Ashoke’s memory (with respect for his beloved wife Lakshmisri) to: Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 1500 Rosecrans Avenue, Suite 200, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266 (www.pancan.org).

The first time I met Ashok was in 1981 when he picked Geeti, Darshana, Chetana and me from Cooney Hall, graduate students apartments in Temple University, Philadelphia, and drove us to his place in Newark, Delaware for Lunch. I had seen him before but from a distance, when he got married to Lakshmi, my dear friend Subhas’s elder sister. It was party time, Subhas and our friends were the usual wild teenagers and a good time was had by all. On the way to Newark, Ashok stopped at the International Food and Spice, an Indian grocery store located at 4203 Walnut St in West Philly, owned by a Sikh immigrant whose wife made these khasta Punjabi samosas, served with amazing imli and pudina chutneys. It was mind blowing good, the first taste of Delhi after 2 years in Philly, eating local foods.✌🏽

Sad to write this note, every time I walk by Lakshmi and Ashoka’s home I miss them so much. Such a full of life couple. Ashoke’s harmonia I was a fan. As a young employee at Louvers I had the opportunity to cross paths with Ashoke in the 1980's. I remember him as a very pleasant and interesting person who seemed to show respect to everyone. Although my work with him was limited during this time, he was someone who left a positive impression on me early in my career. My condolences to his family.

The news of Ashok's passing was extremely shocking. Since Lakshmi's demise, we became more close and we used to call him at our place for Dinner almost every two to three months interval and during such meetings, we learnt so much from him on various subjects. Just a week before his passing I had a query on Election and he promptly responded. A well read Man who was always eager to help and share his knowledge to anyone who asked. We will miss him and may God bless his soul in eternal peace.

We are very sad to learn about Ashoke's sudden demise. He had been a dear friend to us and we have fond memories of both him and Lakshmi. He had a heart of gold and he was always willing to help people in many different ways. We ourselves still remember the help he gave us at our son's wedding seven years ago. It is difficult to imagine that he would pass away so suddenly. In fact, I had just sent him an email on Thursday asking for a referral, and he replied on Friday to me with the information. Then we learnt that he passed away on Saturday! But we are glad that he did not suffer and went peacefully. Our condolences to the whole family. We will all really miss him.

Met Ashoke in 1992. I was working for an Indian engineering company and came to Delaware by invitation by DuPont on a project. Ashoke took care of us. Years later, I joined Dupont and moved end 1998 to USA. Ashoke and I worked on many projects and I thoroughly enjoyed working with him. He is a gentleman. Past several years, I met Ashoke several times at our monthly Duponter’s get together that Fateh coordinates. I still cannot believe that Ashoke is not with us anymore but I pray that his Atma attains Sathgathi 🙏🏽

Ashoke was such a gentleman. I didn't work directly under his group but we crossed path several times with projects. When I joined DuPont right after school, he was a welcoming person with a nice smile in our Engineering Dept. I could still see his smile as he walks through the hallways. May he rest in peace and give his family all the strength needed.
