Anne-Marie Shamus

Anne-Marie Shamus, age 73 of Bear, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 12th. She was born in Scranton, PA and later moved to Cleveland with her family.

Having obtained her Bachelor’s degree at The Ohio State University, she went on to earn her Master’s degree in social work at Marywood University, where she met her future husband.

She had a passion for social causes, participating in several civil rights marches during the 60s and working on political campaigns. During her early career in social work, she moved to Delaware, where she was a clinical social worker with Catholic Charities. She then pursued a career as a legal secretary at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, and remained there for over 40 years, retiring in 2020.

One of Anne-Marie’s loves was singing and listening to music. She especially enjoyed Jason Mraz and Nora Jones. She performed The Messiah with the Delaware Choral Society. One of her greatest joys was attending Hamilton on Broadway. Among her passions were attending musicals, tracking the Decorah eagles, whale watching, and playing sudoku.

Anne-Marie was a uniquely selfless and caring person and always put the needs of others above her own. She was preceded in death by her parents along with her brother, Thomas McCaffrey, and son-in-law, Robert Major. She is survived by her beloved husband of 45 years, Raymond; daughters Karen of New York City and Michelle Major of Phoenixville, PA; brother Edward McCaffrey (Denise) of Blue Bell, PA; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Anne-Marie’s name to Doctors Without Borders or Meals on Wheels.

Michelle and Karen - I am so sorry to hear about your mom's passing. I worked with her at Skadden for 10 years. I tell people all the time that my favorite thing about my job is the people I work with, and your mom is always at top of my mind when I say that. My desk was across the hall from hers, and we shared a lot of stories about our families and just life over the years. I so enjoyed those conversations. I could always count on her to lend an ear and to fill the lengthy hours with humor and joy. She had some really amazing experiences and a great perspective on life. She especially loved sharing stories about you two - Karen's adventures in NYC with her cats and Michelle's business trips to Germany. Although it cannot lessen your loss, I wanted you to know what an impact she had on those she worked with and the kindness she showed me as a young lawyer struggling to balance a career and family. Sometimes the completely ordinary encounters are the ones that change you the most. Her presence was always subtle, but the humility she exhibited was profound, and I feel truly blessed to have known her. Please know that I will be praying for her and for your family. Elisa Klein

Dear Ray Karen and Michelle, my sincerest condolences for the loss of Anne Marie. She and I worked together and sat right next to each other for the past 6 years. She was a mentor to me when I first started at Skadden. We spoke a lot about the girls as I know Michelle was a first responder as is my husband. We talked a lot about our curly hair and working out at the gym. She will be truly missed and I am so very sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Michelle Finch

Anne-Marie was a true light to everyone she met. May God be with you during this difficult time, and may He grant her soul eternal rest. I had the pleasure of working with Anne-Marie for a few years, and I always enjoyed talking to her. We had some great conversations about music, Irish history, and the Catholic faith. I enjoyed hearing her stories about growing up in Scranton, and I pray that she may now be enjoying a heavenly reunion with the family and friends who have gone before her.

Just wanted Anne-Marie’s family to know I still remember her in my prayers. I worked with Anne-Marie for over thirty years. In all that time she remained a true gentle, kind, generous, intelligent lady. And, she loved being a mother. I treasure each long, thoughtful, insightful, conversation we ever had (especially about birds) because she was a wealth of knowledge and could teach in a most graceful way. How fortunate to have such a beautiful soul for your mother and wife. You’re truly blessed. 🙏 Miss and love you Anne-Marie! 👼 May God keep you in His embrace and may peace surround your family. 🙏 ~Maria
