Ann Lynn Hilkert

Ann Lynn Hilkert, age 75, a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and colleague, of Wilmington, DE, passed away in Dana Point, CA, on July 4, 2024.

Born in 1948, in Plainfield, NJ, to Luke and Isabelle Comune, Ann graduated from Plainfield High School in 1966. She went on to earn her degree in Elementary Education from Saint Elizabeth University in 1970. Ann later continued her education earning a master’s degree in Special Education from Nazareth College in 1976 and a master’s in Economics Education from the University of Delaware in 1988.

Ann began her career as a teacher, making impactful stops at various schools across the country and even one in Germany. She eventually found her long-term home as a special education teacher at Brandywine School District in Wilmington, DE, where she dedicated the majority of her career. Ann’s passion for education and her unwavering commitment to her students led her to become the Director of Pupil Services, a position she held until her retirement in 2011.

Ann was immensely proud of her work as an educator, always advocating fervently for her students. Her dedication extended beyond the classroom as she also served as an adjunct instructor at Wilmington University, sharing her knowledge and love for teaching with future educators.

Above all, Ann cherished her family and treasured the moments spent at the beach with her children and grandchildren. She could often be found swimming, running, and biking at her happy place in Stone Harbor, NJ. Ann had a special affection for her dogs, and she spread Dozer’s love to those in need through volunteer opportunities, which brought her immense peace and joy.

Ann leaves behind a loving family who will miss her dearly: her beloved children Brandon Hilkert (married to Elizabeth), Stephanie Muscara (married to Anthony), and Megan Olveren (married to Magnus), and her treasured grandchildren Sienna, Cruz, Noah, and Lucas, Dominic, and Mia. Also mourning her loss is her brother Jack (married to Jane) and many nieces and nephews. Ann was preceded in death by her husband Jeffrey Bross and brother Ronald Comune.

A Visitation will be held on Monday, July 29, 2024 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, 7 Sharpley Rd., Wilmington, DE 19803, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE 19808.

On behalf of Plainfield High School's class of 1966, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Ann's family. Through school we all knew and called her "Sis" and it continued on, when anyone would mention Sis we all knew who they were talking about. Sis was always upbeat and bubbly, and friendly. We were in a few classes together and she was fun to be around. May her memory be a blessing. Barbara Estrin Rubin

My heartfelt condolences to all of Sis's family. Sis was a beautiful soul with an unending devotion to all of her loved ones! She and I first became friends in the 1960's when we were cheerleaders for our Jr. high school football team (go Maxson/Hubbard) The years passed by and we saw each other at our Plainfield High School reunions....then 8 years ago we reconnected when my Navy son was stationed in DE, many fun adventures began at that point! Sis and Jeff came to visit us in SC and my husband and I visited them at the Jersey Shore, we took several trips to FL to stay with Nancie one of our PHS friends, and on and on. Sis felt like a kindred spirit to me and I will cherish the memories that we have shared! She loved her family so much and I feel like I know all of you from hearing so many great stories (esp. the one's about the grandkids)! The last few years have been so difficult, but her positive attitude, faith in God and courage to go on will always be remembered. She was a very special friend and will be sorely missed. Sincerely, Linda Heyman Schueler

Ann, as a colleague and friend for many years, I will always remember the fun times we shared: supporting my journey through RCIA, building your deck, beach trips with BJ, convincing me to adopt that little black kitten BJ found (Midnight), who brought me such joy for 20 years, and the positive impact you had on all of our students. Sissy will always have a special place in my heart. I loved her and I am so grateful for her support with my music. I had so much admiration and respect for Sis, Ron and Jack. As I adored her father Uncle Luke and Aunt Bell and all our gatherings growing up in Plainfield, NJ. Our last get together with the Comune’s was so lovely (hosted at Roseann’s home). Sis will truly be missed and I am grateful she was with her beautiful family. I especially enjoyed seeing all her posts and photos of her extraordinary family. The love and joy in Sissy’s face was extraordinary. And it made me feel close to her again. My condolences to all and her beloved family.
