Angela Ganiaris

Our dear Angela, age 62, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, May 1, 2022, with her family by her side.

The youngest of five sisters, Angie was special in many ways. Diagnosed with autism late in her childhood, Angela developed her own means of communicating with us. We have many memories of her resilience, courage, and determination to achieve despite her many challenges. In 2005, she was diagnosed with transverse myelitis and had to use a wheelchair, but even then, she kept smiling.

Angela’s home for the past 26 years was the Mary Campbell Center in Wilmington, DE, a residential care facility. Her life was greatly enriched by the love and care she received there and by the many educational, cultural, musical and social activities the Center provided. Angie also participated in swimming, Special Olympics, and activities with many wonderful volunteers. The care and compassion she was given by her MCC family truly made this a loving home. This was extended to our family, as we were always welcome to be involved in her daily life.

Angela loved the beach, trips to Longwood Gardens and museums, going to the movies, and most of all family gatherings and holiday celebrations. Her disabilities inspired her family to advocate for appropriate educational programming for individuals with special needs in the state.

Angela is predeceased by her parents, Father Stamos and Presbytera Ioanna (Joan) Ganiaris. She is survived by four sisters, Helen (David), Soula (Mike), Tina (Jamie) and Maria (John), her nieces Anna (Eric), Katie and Evie (Matt), her nephews Tom (Sara), Alex, William, and Matthew, and her great nieces and nephews Evie, Michael, Frank and Lucy.

A funeral will be held for Angela at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N. Broom St, Wilmington, DE 19806 on Monday, May 9, 2022 at 11:00 am, with visitation at 10:00. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, Angie’s family kindly requests that donations be made to the Mary Campbell Center, 4641 Weldin Rd., Wilmington, DE 19803, marycampbellcenter.org, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N. Aww....we are saddened to hear the news about Angie. Our deepest sympathies and condolences to all the family. Despite her disability, I always remember hearing about how smart and brave Angie was, and breakthrough moments she would have - which would make us very happy. She had so much to give, and when we heard years ago that she was able to communicate better through different methods, and unlock her feelings and emotions and connect with the world around her and her family, it seemed powerfully moving and miraculous. When I think of Angie, I also cannot help but to think of the love that her sisters, parents, and family felt for her, and how special a person she was in everyone's hearts. Whenever my cousins would speak of her, it was with an overwhelming sense of love and admiration. I know she will be deeply missed. May she rest in eternal peace! Much much love and prayers to all.

She, most certainly, put up a brave battle throughout all of her years I know that the CONTINUOUS. support of her loving parents and dear sisters, as well as the caring staff at the Mary Campbell Center, certainly were a tremendous “guiding light” during her 62 years. On the eve of Angie’s funeral tomorrow, my thoughts and prayers are with my lovely nieces Helen, Tina, Soula, Maria and their families. May our “Angelic Angela” forever Rest In Peace in the loving arms of God and her dear Mama and Papa. She will be missed, and we will carry her in our hearts always XO

    GEORGE PLERHOPLES writes,
Our deep condolences go to the entire Ganiaris family on the loss of Angela. I know the family provided love and caring for her during her life. My first memory of Angela was when she came with her parents to our family farm as a very young child. I was too young and ignorant at the time to understand the profound issues she suffered from. She underwent many trials and tribulations throughout her life. May her soul and the souls of her parents , who were lovely and caring people , be also held eternal in everyone's memories.
